Help---My 97 is mad at me!

#24

Hello all:

I sure hope someone can help me! My favorite calculator is at stake...

I have a very nice 97, with a functional card reader and printer. I use if fairly often in brief stints (it's on my desk with a home-made cardboard dust cover). Since I wanted it to be a tethered calculator, and I didn't ever want to worry about batteries, I modified it. I got a 6 VDC wall wort, and wired it to the battery contacts in the battery compartment (going in through the AC adapter hole). The wall wort is behind a 650 VA APC UPS, so it shouldn't ever see any voltage spikes or high voltage.

I used the calc. Thursday, and read a card. I used the calc. after reading the card---everything was normal. Today, I slid the on/off switch on, and...NOTHING! There is a very brief display of the low-battery indicator as the switch is thrown (and sometimes a whisper of a digit). I assume that this is just normal transitory behavior, but the point is that there appears to be some power to the display at some point.

I have verified that 6.29 VDC is at the battery terminals. I took the 97 apart, but I'm lost under the hood! I did find what looked suspiciously like a voltage regulator circuit behind the upper-left part of the calc. (it has a + and - on the PCB). I found that there is 6.00 VDC present there.

The wall wort can supply 700 mA, which always seemed enough for card-reading and printing. It's worked for many, many burst calculations; until now...

:-(

Can any "HP-qualified technicians" out there give me any hints? I have very limited diagnostic equipment (basically just a Radio Shark DVM/DAM/DOM).

Please help. A 97 is a terrible thing to waste!

Thanks,
Bruce.

Hello;

I've been seeing many requests on HW support that is not available from HP anylonger. As Mr. Bruce fairly mentions:

"Can any "HP-qualified technicians" out there give me any hints? "

I read many posts in here that are full of good information on repairing calculators and peripheral devices. My "phoenix" HP41CV fullnut is alive cause of a lot of tips from many fellows in here (thanks everybody, mostly Tony Duel-UK).

I suggest joinning all experiences on HW for these models - 41C/CV/CX and peripherals, HP67/97 and others - in one big post placed at Repairs (as there are for the 41/97's card readers) so that people like me, Mr. Bruce and any others could access and try repairing for ourselves.

Would you kind souls find some time to help? I myself will travel through the HP Forum in here trying to jhoin as much material as available and, soon, I'll contact the writers so some good stuff will sure arise.

Mr. Bruce, I cannot help for now, but I sincerely hope you are as lucky as I was with my 41CV. As you know, Wizards in here are beside us...

Regards.

I nearly didn't bother to reply -- you said 'HP qualfiied technicians'. I am not HP qualified -- in fact I am not qualified at all. So you might just want to ignore the rest of this message..
Should you want comments from somebody who's fixed Topcats within living memory, read on.
I am worried that your PSU mod has done serious damage to the machine. The original battery pack is 4.8V-5V _not_ 6V (NiCd cells are about 1.2V each). This is converted by a little oscillator+transformer circuit on the
CPU board to provide +6.2V (Vss) and -12V (Vgg). One feature of this circuit is that Vss can never be lower than the battery voltage. So if you're applying 6.9V to the battery terminals, then you'be probably got a Vss line that's higher than it should be. And Vss is connected to just about every chip in the machine.
You might be lucky, though. Start by giving the machine 5V or so at the battery terminals. The original NiCd pack, or a bench PSU set to 5V, or whatever. But not that wall-wart -- those things are notorious for non-existant regulation. Turn the machine on.
Connect the common lead of your DVM to the battery -ve terminal, or to some other system 0V point. Find the ACT chip (processor) -- it's the only 22 pin chip (0.4" wide) on the logic board. Pin 12 is ground (if you needa 0V reference), pin 1 is Vss, pin 2 is Vgg. Check those 2 voltages with your voltmeter. If both look OK, then you've probably blown a chip somewhere :-(. If Vss is a little less than 5V, and Vgg is slightly +ve, then the PSU oscillator is not running. If Vss is fine, and Vgg is low, then there's a problem with the PSU circuit. Anyway, check those voltages, let us know what you find, and I'll suggest other tests.

Tony: Let me assure you than - apart from Mr. H & Mr P. themselves, the HP calculator design teams, and a handful of people showing here regularly - , you are one of the most qualified persons about HP calcs, specially from a hardware point of view. Your very detailed descriptions always let us all to learn a lot about the circuits, components, techniques and architecture present on these fascinating devices. Keep posting!!

Tony:

Now I don't know whether you are joking, or not...I put the "qualified" part in quotes on purpose---referring to the many hardware-qualified experts here!

Not that it makes a huge difference, but the voltage at the terminals was 6.29, not 6.9 VDC. And yes, I knew that the NiCds produced 5.0 VDC. It looks like I incorrectly assumed that the circuit would handle 6 volts instead of 5. Usually, the HP circuits are well over-designed, but it appears in this case that they didn't figure on a chuckle-head hooking 6.3 VDC to the battery terminals!

Thank you very much for the detailed debug instructions. I will let you know what I find, as soon as I find it!

Thanks again,
Bruce.

Hello, Bruce;

Tony will be mad with me for that, but I am sure he was NOT joking... he was introducing himself. As many qualified helpers found in here, he does not consider himself as "qualified"; and Andrés Rodrigues said so: Tony is one of the (many) guys in here that much helps on HW problems like yours.

(Hey, Tony; don't be mad, please... I am just trying to give Mr. Bruce a relax.)

Hi Luiz,

I used to work in grad. school with a guy named Luiz, except he was from Peru.

Thanks for the reply. I'm constantly amazed by the international participation in this forum, and I think that your English (and all the other non-english-speaking contributors) is excellent!

That being said, I really do wish that you could "give [me] a relax"!...That would be one present I could use right now!

:-)
Thanks,

Bruce. (no "Mr." formality needed!)

#31

Hey, Bruce;

thanks a lot! I hope I can deserve these words. (Believe-me, I do not hear amazings like this in my country; people in here seem not to understand what I write or say... even in Portuguese).

Have you tried finding an HP67 junk? I have built an HP41 with some stuff taken from another. It’s not hard at all. It will be hard, yes, finding some HP67 junk. Is it easy in your country?

Good luck.

#32

Why should I be mad at you (or anyone else here?). My original comment was just to ensure that nobody thought I was claiming something that was false. I am certainly not 'HP qaulified'. I've never worked for HP, I've never been on an HP training course, I've never been an HP service dealer, or anything like that.
All my knowledge of HP calculators comes (as for most other here) from using, modifying, repairing, etc my own machines (and other peoples).
I guess I was saying that if you want the 'official HP methods' then ignore my message because I can't tell you those.

#33

Let me deal with the second part first. Yes, I misread the voltage you'd used in the original message. 6.29V probably won't have damaged ICs by itself, but it may well cause the PSU converter circuit to shut down (the PSU converter regulates the Vss line, and Vgg follows along,
if Vss is high for some other reason (as here), it stops the oscillator). So Vgg would be missing. The machine won't work like that. ICs might be damaged, they might be OK (I recently repaired a topcat where the oscillator transistor was open-circuit, Hgg was missing, but the machine worked fine after the PSU had been repaired).
HP calculators are designed with the assumption that you will use the right HP battery pack. There is little/no overvoltage or reverse-polarity protection on machines that take a special HP battery pack. So be careful!
Now for the first part, about qualifications. You've hit one of my pet rants, I'm afraid.
I have no formal qualifications in electronics or computing (my Ph.D. is in experimental partical physics -- which the way I did it involved a lot of homebrew electronics). And I am
someewaht fed up of being told I'm not qualified to do something (like buy spare parts to fix the TV set) when I could proably make the parts from scratch if I needed to. Sorry about the rant, and I'll read the other replies.

I think we just had a mis-communication. I put "qualified" in quotes for a reason---the reason was that I didn't mean it. I thought that this convention held in the UK too, but maybe it doesn't...I really don't know. In any case, it would be pretty presumptuous of me to only want help from HP-certified people---and that is _not_what I meant! :-)

I wouldn't assume there are _any_ HP-qualified technicians following this forum. You are exactly the type of information source I was hoping for!

Thanks,

Bruce.

#35

Tony (and all other HW gurus):

I think I'm going to be very unhappy!

I used an extra HP-classic charger that I had as the battery-supply source (it's what I have to work with at home). The voltage was 5.1 VDC from the voltage-supply half of the charger, which I hooked to the battery terminals.

Vss at the "ACT" was +6.0 VDC

Vgg at the "ACT" was -11.9 VDC

Is this the end? :-(

Please let me know if there is anything I can do...Is there a "primary suspect" chip, that I might be able to replace with one from a not-so-good 97?

Thanks for the help!

Bruce.

p.s. With the "new" power supply the low-battery indicator is constantly lit. Why is that?

#36

> With the "new" power supply the low-battery indicator is constantly lit. Why is that?

I suspect it's because you used it without a battery pack in place. The battery pack plays an important role in both regulating the (completely unregulated) charger voltage and also by supplying extra current when the machine needs it.

One question: the PSU you used in the past, was it a regulated unit? Nice, smooth, stabilized DC? Or was it just an ordinary cheap wall wart that puts out an unregulated, one-way rectified half-wave?

I originally asked:

Viktor:

My understanding of the HP 97 charger (wall wort) is that it is a regulated supply. I thought I saw a voltage regulator inside one once...Is this wrong? So, as far as the regulation of the "new" PSU, my assumption was that it was regulated. Now, as far as the battery pack supplying extra current (for printing and card reading?), I agree completely. But why would the indicator be lit constantly?

As far as my "old"---offender---PSU, I'm ashamed to say that I don't know...Once again, being the naive engineer, I assumed that 6 VDC meant good DC. Now that you mention it though, I shouldn't be surprised if it was only a rough, rectified signal...

Now that I've possibly killed my favorite HP, and I'm exposing my stupidity to the HP Museum crowd, I really can't believe I made so many dangerous assumptions regarding my modification!

Sadly,

Bruce.

#38

> My understanding of the HP 97 charger (wall wort) is that it is a regulated supply

It is not. It's just an AC transformer, there are no other components in the wall wart (at least in the wall warts that I've seen, there may be different international versions.) The HP manual mentions that although you cannot harm the calculator this way, it won't operate correctly from the adapter alone with no battery pack installed.

> But why would the indicator be lit constantly?

Since we don't know what state your broken calculator is in, there's no easy answer to that question.

> I assumed that 6 VDC meant good DC

Just about ALL so-called "universal" adapters are consist simply of a transformer (with multiple taps on the secondary winding if it has a voltage switch) and a rectifier. Some of the fancier units have a bridge rectifier, but that's about the level of sophistication you find in these units.

Viktor

#39

I can confirm that every topcat series charger I've seen (and I've seen the UK one, the Europen one, and the USA one) is just a transformer. No rectifier, smoothing cap, or regulator.
As regards cheap wall-warts, most of them have a full-wave rectifier, normaly of the bridge rectifier type, and a smoothing capacitor (of around 1000uF). No regulator. The output voltage rises on no-load, and the ripple on full-load can be significant.
Having been inside a few wall-warts, I honestly wonder how some of them pass the electrical safety requirements (and when I have them smoke and melt, I know they're not safe). I rarely use generic wall-warts for this reason -- I prefer my own home-brew PSUs. Of course I'm not qualified to say that they are safe (that ties in to an earlier message), but none of my PSUs has ever smoked, caught fire, given an electric shock or done anything even moderately harmful.

#40

Tony:

Regarding the transformer, I did not mean to say a 97 charger, I meant a _classic_ charger. I'm using the regulated voltage supply (that is supposed to be 4.0 VDC, but it isn't); it is 5.1 VDC.

I address your other questions in a post further down.

Bruce.

#41

I am now confused as to just what you are using....
The HP97 PSU is just a transformer. 8V AC, on load (actually, 12V off-load, with a 10 ohm internal resistance -- I've measured it). The HP97 will _not_ work from that PSU without a battery pack in place -- the supply isn't smoothed for one thing (the battery pack does that). That might explain the low battery LED being on all the time (or at least turning on/off at twice mains frequency which would appear to be continuously on)
The 'classic series' charger is quite complicated inside -- and it is regulated (4.1V constant voltage for the logic, 50mA or so constant current for the NiCd charger). What are you attempting to use to run the 97 (it is a 97, right -- with a built-in printer?)

#42

What are you using as the PSU? The 'classic charger' is the 3 pin one used on the HP35, 45, 55, 65, 67, 70, 80 right? The constant voltage part of that should be 4.1V or thereabouts. If you are getting 5.1V then either the charger is defective, it's been modified, or your voltmeter is inaccurate. It's worth finding out which at this point.
That is a regulated PSU, but the current rating (and smoothing capacitor size) is a bit small for a topcat machine. The supply might not be stable and smooth on-load.
Vss and Vgg look reasonable, but if the PSU input is not smooth then they might not be smooth either. I really would try to get a stable 5V supply (an old PC PSU with a suitable dummy load to keep it happy if you can't get anything else ?) and see what happens then.
Assuming you have a stable input supply, and Vss/Vgg look fine, then you really need a 'scope or logic probe/analyser for the next tests (CPU clock signals, ISA, Sync lines).
One trivial thing. Make sure the printer PCB is properly connected to the logic board. The CPU clock oscillator tank circuit is on the printer PCB (there is a good reason for this, I think, see below), and if the printer PCB is not properly connected, then the CPU clock doesn't run.
The low battery LED being on all the time certainly suggests that the PSU you're now using is not up to the job, though.
Oh yes, the reason for the CPU tank being on the printer PCB. Well, the tank circuit sets the CPU clock frequency, and due to variations in the inductor and capacitor value, not all machines run at quite the same speed. The printout intensity depends on CPU speed IIRC, and is also controlled by a resistor on the printer PCB. By putting the tank circuit there as well, the printer PCB both sets the CPU clock frequency and sets the printer intensity resistor appropriately. Any printer PCB works with any CPU PCB with no adjustments and no problems.

#43

Tony (and other HW gurus following my plight):

What are you using as the PSU? The 'classic charger' is the 3 pin one
used on the HP35, 45, 55, 65, 67, 70, 80 right? The constant voltage part of
that should be 4.1V or thereabouts. If you are getting 5.1V then either the

Sorry for the confusion. I did _not_ mean to say a 97 wall-wart. I _did_ mean
the classic charger. Yes, the constant-voltage side is supposed
to be about 4.0 VDC, but this one is actually 5.1 VDC. In order to see if the
DVM is reading 25% high, I checked several AA and AAA cells. I got 1.43 VDC to
1.49 VDC. I don't think the meter is in error; I think the supply puts out 5.1
VDC. Unfortunately, I don't have a scope at home, so I can't verify the signal
by looking at the waveform.

That is a regulated PSU, but the current rating (and smoothing
capacitor size) is a bit small for a topcat machine. The supply might not be
stable and smooth on-load. Vss and Vgg look reasonable, but if the PSU input is
not smooth then they might not be smooth either. I really would try to get a
stable 5V supply (an old PC PSU with a suitable dummy load to keep it happy if
you can't get anything else ?) and see what happens then.

I'll work on verifying that the results are the same with a better power supply.

Assuming you have a stable input supply, and Vss/Vgg look fine, then
you really need a 'scope or logic probe/analyser for the next tests (CPU clock
signals, ISA, Sync lines). One trivial thing...
TEXT DELETED.

Thanks,

Bruce.

I don't think the reason the HP97 clock oscillator is on the printer card has much to do with the line width or the print intensity.

There is a resistor on the printer board that sets the print head pulse width (intensity). Another resistor sets the printer motor speed (line width). I have twiddled with the CPU clock components and got no change in the print intensity but could get some variation in line width... but not anything like you can get by changing the motor speed resistor.

All the HP97 units I have seen seemed to have the same value of clock capacitor and inductor so I don't think that HP selected them to match the printer. Also the clock rate does change some with different CPU chips.

#45

I think you misunderstood me. I am not claiming that HP selected the clock tank components to get the printer to work to spec. But rather that because those components (the inductor and capacitor) have a 10% tolerance (or so), the resulting CPU clock speed will be different in differnet machines.
And thus 2 select-on-test resistors in the printer circuit (one for the motor speed/line length, the other for the print intensity) would have to be altered depending on the actual CPU clock tank components used.
I thought that intensity was the critical one, but you're probably right and it's line lenght that you have to fiddle with.
By putting the tank circuit on the printer board, the resistors can be selected to work with _the actual values of inductance and capacitance_ of that tank circuit.
So no matter what logic board that printer board is used with, the printer will work to spec without having to change the resistors again. If the tank circuit was on the logic board then you'd have to fiddle with resistor values after replacing the printer PCB.

#46

Yes, I always assumed that is why HP placed the tank circuit on the printer board... but then I have an HP97 printer that prints normally in some machines, but in others up to 3/4 of the left most character in program listings is cut off. I think the internal variation in the oscillator circuit of various ACT chips is such that HP's well meaning design feature is somewhat lacking. It would have been nice if they had just used trim pots.
