HP-41CX - What is this?

#32

I opened up a 41CX to check for corrosion and found something I have never seen before. There was a pcb that was
mounted at an odd position. Looks like it was just kludged on.

It had a pair of wires that went up to a glass component with a connection at each end.

I cannot figure out what this is for and have never seen one of these before. At first I thought light but it is on the back side of the display.

What is this pcb and what is it for? Is it something that might have been added by someone besides HP?

#33

Hello Mike,

This is a hyper circuit. Used to speed up the processor clock by a factor of (typically) four. The glass object is a magnetic read relay. This particular circuit is a latching type. Click the relay once and it goes fast. Hit it again and it goes slow. Press "BEEP" to check the difference. A lot of times you will see this same circuit connected to a tiny push button in the charger tunnel port.

#34

Hello;

I found it very interesting.

Not that I will "dare" for now, but is it easy to get the schematics for the hyper?

- is it (or can it be) harmfull for the calculator?

- in the CX, does it generate any glitch in the Clock?

- Power consumption...?

- does it work fine in the CV too?

- versions for Halfnut and fullnut (if so) are different? (connections of course, I believe)

Thanks.

#35

The manufacturer of the hyper circuit was careful to remove the chip ID numbers, so a quick and dirty trace is not possible. It is a obviously a fairly simple circuit... probably just a toggle flip flop, some switch debounce logic, and an analog switch to switch a capacitor in series with the one on the CPU board timing circuit. There are conenctions to power, ground, the switch (or reed relay), and the timing capacitor. You had to lift one end of the cap and connect one lead the the cap and one to the cpu board.

If you look carefully at the shape of the board you will see that is actually designed to fit in the gutter of the case by the charger tunnel port.

Yes, it works on the C, CV, CX, full nuts and half nuts. I have had all types of units with them installed. It seems to work well and does not seem to screw up the CX clock. You need to slow the CPU back down to normal speed to work with some peripherals (notably the card reader). Others actually work better at hyper speed.

#36

Greetings....

I used to have a hyper kit on my CX that gave me a 1.95x increase in speed. In fact, I bought it specifically to speed up my feet-inches-fractions program, which is posted here under HP-41 software. The ONLY problem I had was battery consumption. I estimate that the alkalines lasted about 1/4 as long at the higher speed. I ended up getting rechargables. They didn't go too long between charges, but at least I wasn't spending money all the time on batteries.

#37

luiz; when these things were common i heard they caused a small drop in accuracy when engaged. not enough to matter in most cases, and if you are worried about your 5th significant digit after 46 iterations then you probably use a saturn processor anyway. it's just that you asked a lot of other questions about the speed up and this is a not to obvious one. - d

#38

This set of messages brings back lots of memories from my student days. I must have 'turbo charged' in excess of
200 41's of all kinds of versions/types for both friends (in exchange for beer) as well as for corporations.

I'm sure that there are people here that know more than I do about this matter, but I can't help but sharing this.

The typical speed gain was about 2x with a 30pF capacitor

The half nut circuits works great even without the mounted 150pF capacitor at 3-4x (BEEP sounds very different at that speed).

To check that all circuits worked propperly I managed to get a copy of the 41 diagnostics ROM for my home made MLDL and that way was able to actually certify the machine as fully functional even with the card reader.

I used a small sliding switch in the battery tunel.

db:

How could a clock frequency change had any impact on *numeric* accuracy ? (I think it is not possible, but who knows...)

I assume it may have a possible impact on the Time Module because it uses an adjustment factor, so the timing of the adjustment operation is part of the correction.

It also may have impact on peripherals where software timing loops are used. About the card reader, I recall the cards have a data and a clock track, to make them somehow independent of internal clocks... but perhaps a 2X speed is too much to compensate for.

Also the wand barcode format is self-clocking (measuring relative intervals between transitions), but again, 2X may affect its timing.

It is obvious that power consumption will increase. Did any of you saw any change in display contrast or behavior due to the different clock? I assume no, since the display has its own timing, independent from the CPU.

A long-unasked question with due respect (just curiosity); Why all of your typing is lower case, is it kind of a statement on something, or just a personal preference? :-)

#40

I think the power increase with the hyper module running was less than 50%, not enough to really matter as the power draw only occurs when running a program. Between keystrokes the machine still draws negligible power.

If I remember right the bar code wand actually runs better in hypered mode. I think the same applies for the HP-IL module.

#41

mark,
maybe, the wand will run better at higher cpu clock.
as for the IL- module, speeding up the cpu by some ratio has the annoying side-effect, that it will become 'short-fused' by the same ratio. example: when it has to wait for a full cassette rewind of the hp82161 drive, it will be coming up with a 'TRANSMIT ERR', while the cassette is still under way.

cheers, hans

#42

the speed - accuracy connection may be just an "urban legend". it's something i was told but never tested. maybe if someone here has both a stock and hot rodded 41 he could try a simple experiment like repetitive square roots then squares to see if theres a difference between the two, or some better method.
the lower case thing started while i was typing a letter that was part of a long friendly argument with an old climbing partner. i got uncomfortable about capitalising my personal pronoun while saying "i think, i believe" etc. the rest of it is just laziness.
nowadays i usually take fewer liberties in spanish because i already sound like a drooler speaking it anyway. that and as you can see from how i spelled your name my keyboard doesn't have acentos - or enie's, or upsidedown signos de interrogacion either. so why go looking for more mistakes?

#43

Hello;

maybe (as happens sometimes) I did not express my actual concern that was about time-counting clock. Both I understand:

- If a glitch happens at the system clock when an internal routine is running (SIN, FACT, etc.), what would really happen? Would it cause a 'glitch' in the final result, too? I believe that faster than normal clock + spurious hi-freq noise in a 350KHz system (is it correct for the HP41?) would allow it, NOT specific cause it. If we go deeper in the gates circuitry, a glitch could switch some states ON or OFF inadvertently, mostly in a MOS, battery operated family.

- If a glitch happens at the system clock, would it affect the time-counting clock? As stated before, if the system is updating its own clock by using machine's reference (say, Accuracy Factor) it may also happen.

I just thought about what would happen, system ON or OFF (OFF desirable, right?), by closing a magnet to the ReedSwitch so the system clock would speed up or down. Would it affect the time-counting clock?

This thread, as many others, has many intriguing stuff. I really appreciate this kind of discussion. Thanks, falks.

(About spelling: you are lucky not spelling Portuguese...)

Thank you for your answer. About typing, I am not very good either, and while I try to recheck my English many times before posting, I know it is less than perfect. Oh, even my Spanish could be better, and certainly a person from Spain or Mexico will not agree with us (Argentinians from Buenos Aires city, to be more specific) on whether all we speak is the same language...

Indeed, the support of an accent key and also the "enie" (for people from other countries: it is a "n" letter with a "~" tilde as accent, and pronounced with a "ni" sound, like the "ne" in 'new') are some of the technical reasons for purchasing Spanish-language software and keyboards. A problem with my HP LX200, for instance.

The accents and special characters are a problem with software which has to apply the proper "collating sequence" or sort order; and for search engines that have to decide if a accented word is (or is not) the same than the unaccented version...

But we are far more ASCII compatible than the Japanese, Chinese, etc...

#45

You guys are *too* modest (I mean that sincerely). You (Luiz, Andres and many of our European contributors) are fluently multi-lingual and your English would put that of many native speakers to shame. I can but mumble in one language (well, I can think in 4-5 computer languages but that doesn't count (hehe, and none of them are SQL, COBOL or BASIC) ;-)

My definition of "good writing" is that where the author's ideas flow fluidly from the page into my mind. Using that definition as a benchmark, all contributors to this forum are better-than-average writers.

Thanks! Encouragement as yours, and the words "It works!" are two of my favorite "fuels".

#47

Saying "You made my day" is not enough.

Thanks...

(Andrés, can I borrow your words?)

As Andrés wrote: Encouragement as yours, and the words "It works!" are two of my favorite "fuels".

#48

Of course you can; Luiz!... and thank you too!

#49

Speed-ups do not affect the clock module. It has its own precise quartz crystal. The CORRECT function is to adjust for average temperature and crystal differences.

#50

While it is clear that the clock module has it's own crystal (in fact, there is not another crystal!), I guessed that the reported statement about "loss of accuracy" of the calculator because of a higher clock frequency could only make sense if some time-depending functions are hard-coded based on the instructions' regular execution time.

As you can see if you follow the thread form the start, I am skeptical about any loss of numerical accuracy, because the algorithms are not time dependent; but the access to peripherals and/or the use of the ADJUST constant may (just may) take instruction timing into account.

#51

Wow!

Now I see we down here in Brazil know somewhat less than we believe..

Thanks, guys. As I can figure out, some additional power consumption will hapen, some "possible" malfunction from card-readers (critycal clock?) and no reports for harm consequences. Some more questions, if I may:

a manufacturer was mentioned; does it still exist? How to contact?

Thanks again.

#52

Hi Luiz,
many years ago I found an instruction how to speed up the 41s by a self-made device. I made some changes and built it into my 41CV. It still works. It does not need any external switches or drilling holes. Switch to lower speed is done by pressing two buttons together; on mine it's ALPHA and USER. pressing the ON button invokes the hi speed mode. If you are interested in the schematics and the desciption, let me know(I have to dig it out first).
Regards,
Andreas

#53

Danke, Müller;

I would like very much having the schematics.

Take your time digging your stuff (when I dig mine, many lost stuff appear again... Amazing!), and as you find it, send me, please. My e-mail is up here.

Thanks again.

#54

Hi Luiz,
I found the schematics, but they are very badly readable. Scanning them makes no sense. But I will redraw them with EAGLE, make a PCB layout and convert all to *.pdf-files. It will take me some evenings (or more, depends on the mood of my little daughter). Probably the whole thing will have lots of kBytes, so I will send all to dgh to post it the best way.
Regards,
Andreas

#55

Hey, Andreas; please, take your time. Never rush...

I feel thankful for your efforts, and I would like very much knowing that all of your work will result fine for you too, say, using the schematics and the final layout for your own needs, files, etc.

Do you have the Hyper in your 41?

I have a 41CV (fullnut) I use as a test-drive for new programs; speeding it up would save me much time testing, debugging programs; normally I do not connect extensions to it. I´ll take a bit time before updating the others (halfnut CV and CX); I´ll run the fullnut first for a while.

Thanks again and take your time with your princess (I´m a father, too).

Regards.

#56

Hi Luiz,
Thanks for your lovely words.

I do not have the Hyper(as described in the first postings). In my working horse, a 41CV, I have built in exactly the 'SoK(Speedup on Keyboard)' I will describe. It's a completely selfmade/handmade PCB equipped with SMDs. It is running now for about 15 years. BTW, what exactly is a halfnut 41 and a fullnut 41. I often heard and read it but I still don't know the differences exactly. I bought mine in 1981. So, what might it be, full- or half-nut?
Another selfmade thing is an internal switch(a Power-MOSFET)disconnecting battery and calculator(therefor I needed to cut the V+ line coming from the battery). This is invoked by connecting an external (selfmade) charger via connector placed in the power supply tunnel. The charger also contains a 5V-voltage regulator powering the calculator and inserted modules during the charging of the internal N-cells.
Puhh, that's all for today.
Regards, Andreas

#57

Hello, Andres.

The biggest difference between the halfnut and the fullnut is inside the calculators. The so called halfnut has a PQPF processor in the middle if the keyboard PCB while the fullnut has a separated MBoard that contains all circuitry except LCD drivers. In the halfnut CV´s and CX´s (no 41C halfnut) the display assy contains the LCD drivers, ROM and RAM (it reminds me the voyager R2D2... if needed, read http://www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/hpmuseum/forum.cgi?read=12060 ). The first CX´s where fullnut.

In the outside, the difference is seen in the LCD borders and digits aspect. The fullnut has squared corners’ LCD, while the halfnuts have an additional, rounded borders black frame. Also, the digits of the halfnuts have their segments a bit farther from each other.

There are a few other differences - not outside batteries access (dummy tunnel), beeper glued to the backside case, as others - but I cannot think of any other characteristic that would cause bigger impact then the ones mentioned here.

Hey, thanks sharing all of these valuable information. In Brazil, those calcs used to be too expensive for us, students, and cutting-and-pasting components was wizards’ fairs, no to mortals like me. I used to dare only opening some 41's and Voyagers to clean contacts and appreciate HewPack´s technology...

Thanks.

#58

Hi Luiz,
Thx for the info. So I must own a fullnut! Not only in Brazil HP calcs used to be very expensive. Belief me, when I was a student, at that time I bought my 41CV, it was a very hard decision for to that wonderful machine. But the harder things were the peripherals. They've had galactic prices, or should I say intergalactic? No way to get any peripheral. It took me 4 years to make the investment of a card reader. But it's a wonderful machine too, even with the anger of that damned 'gummy wheel'. I had to replace it by a short piece of model aircraft fuel tube. OK, enough talking. But one thing I must say: I'm glad having found this forum. It's amazing how people with similar interests comunicate and interact all around the world. thanks to dgh having installed this.
Regards, Andreas

#59

Hello, Andreas.

I believe everyone in here feel about the same. Me included.

I also have many peripherals. All but one card-reader where bought as used parts. I include a list of all in my Short Bio (to be added soon).

What I did not mention there (in the Bios) is that Ich mag die Deutsch Kultur und Ich habe ein HP11C Bedienungs-und-Programmierhandbuch (not the calculator). I really mean that, but I studied German for only five weeks (about ten hours, nothing more). Is it spelled right? If not, forgive-me.

This is the place I feel surrounded by people who understand what I say.

Regards.

#60

If you can please post here!

#61

come to think of digging....
maybe only interesting to german users, long time ago there was an article in the club news 'PRISMA' of the CCD (computer club deutschland) . it delt with a so-called 'speed-up on keyboard', describing a circuit that could change processor speed by pressing two (individually choosable) keys simultaneously. the circuit is described in PRISMA #2, Feb.1984, and uses one cd4001 and one cd4066.

cheers, hans

#62

Yes Hans,
that is exactly the publication that I took as basics. BTW, this article had an addendum in #3, Mar/Apr 1984. My solution needs one more chip and is a bit more comfortable. It automaticly pushes the first of the two buttons at the end of the whole speed down cycle making the second push by the user unnecessary.
