Since the new year is almost here, I started looking back on this year. It’s been a pretty good year for me. Probably not as good as some others, but I’m pleased, especially with my limited budget.
First is a purchase of a lot of HP calculators that included two HP-42S, a HP-42CX with survey module, a HP-71B with 32M memory module, a HP-48GX, HP-48, HP-19BII, HP-12C, and most were with manuals. All for $280. What really topped it off, was the seller found a mint HP-15C and included it in the package.
Second was finally acquiring the soft leather HP cases for the HP-42S, HP-15C and HP-19BII. Each one was acquired with a different calculator – HP-17BII, HP-12C and HP-28S. The leather cases really dress up the calculators, and look great when I pull out the 15C or 42S in a meeting. Really impresses everyone.
Third was getting a HP-17BII. I’ve really started playing around with the solver on it and the 19BII. Very impressive. I would make the 17BII my standard calculator, if it only had all the Trig functions.
I finally gave up on learning RPL and sold all my HP-48 and 49 models. I did keep the HP-28S, since I like the clamshell design.
On non-calculator, but HP related – After several years, finally acquired the Omnibook 300, 425, and 430 series of laptops. Still looking for a 530 model. It took several years because I refused to pay the prices that they were going far. Got each of them for less than $40 each. The OB430 has been a lot of fun. I have it running DOS, WIN 3.1, Linux, CPM, and emulating the old TRS-80 computers.
On non-calculator, non-HP, totally off-topic - I attended seven “Midnight Rambles” at Levon Helm’s studio barn/home. For you youngsters, Levon was the drummer and one of the lead singers for the group “The Band” from the 60’s and 70’s. They were Bob Dylan’s band when he went electric in the sixties. Just went to the December 23rd ramble and it was fantastic. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys live music. The ramble is in his living room, and the back row seats are only 30 feet from the music.
It’s been a very good year.
How was your year?
HAPPY NEW YEAR
