Wow!
Took me a while to figure out I do indeed have java 2 and to edit my path so that your command files work. Also took me a while to figure out that the Continue key is NOT the same as enter, but thank heavens for the MoHPC DVD and its treasure trove of manuals I am not able to execute simple arithmetic.
What a great opportunity to experience a wonderful machine!
Thank you!
Les

I followed the installation instructions in the documentation (that is, enter a specified command line), and all it does is display a directory window of my windows/java folder.
I am unable to enter a message in the specified project forum.
Can you help?

Sure.
I unzipped the zip directory in a convenient location (I use a subdirectory I created just called Downloads in my My Documents folder).
I then located where the Java 2 executable is (seems I have more than one version of Java on this machine--not sure why). For me, java.exe (the one of interest) has the full command line "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_02\bin\java.exe".
Next, I open for editing each of the four files with a *.cmd extension in the directory where I unzipped the program. In each of these, I replace the word "java" in the command line with the full path above (enclose in quotation marks). I leave the command line switches and specifiers alone!
(An alternate to the above is to change the PATH variable within the OS to include "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_02\bin", but for some reason I prefer full path commands in batch files and to not clutter the PATH variable. Just me.)
To launch whatever version I want, I open the HP98xx home directory and just click on whatever *.cmd file I want to execute. To be real fancy, I guess I could create shortcuts on the desktop, but I haven't gotten there yet.
Works like a charm!
Hope this helps.
Les
P.S. most up to date version of the required Java Runtime Environment is
here. To see what version you have, search your C drive for java.exe and you should be able to infer the version from the directory its in. That's how I did it!

Thanks Les.
I, too, have several instances of java.exe, none of which is the version apparently required for this application.
Since my browser works with Java applets these days, I'm not going to risk ruining everything by downloading a new version of Java just for this emulator. It's just not worth the risk.
Thanks for your help, though, it is appreciated.

Achim,
Fantastic!!! I have a real 9810A and sitting in front of the PC or the real one are very similar experiences, sounds and all. Great work!

It would, but I just put new o-rings inside my PC to keep this from happening. :)

Thank you all for your compliments!
Please remember that problems should be reported to the project help forum.
I also would like you to contribute to the project (see the documentation for details). Many of you may have items still missing in the HP9800E. It's up to you to enhance it with more features.
Best regards,
Achim

What an incredible emulator! Great job. Runs perfect under OSX. (However, I could use a bigger display on my 1024x768 ibook). I love the whirrr of the fans!!! I've been playing with the emulators for 30 minutes and have no idea what I'm doing. I managed to load a casette, etc.. but I am guessing I will need to consult the original HP User Manual(s) in order to truly understand and enjoy these machines.
Soon we may see some HP9800 program/math challenges..
Again, fantastic achievement.
Best regards,
Pal
