HP-50G impressions

#2

I've bought a HP-50G through Samson Cables as I couldn't find one in Switzerland. My first impression was: we're almost there. The keys are ok now - not as good as eg. a HP-41 but I'd rate them usable - still a tad hard though. The screen cover is now of anti glare type which I find good. But they have changed the LCD module (I think a cheaper one). The contrast of the HP-49G+ was a lot higher and better readable. Here we're back to say a HP-48G+ with black LCD. Also I've noticed that the 16 contrast levels are totally decentered. This means you have to adjust it to one end of the scale. The colors and layout is really good now.
The connectivity software on CD wouldn't work on my two machines. According to forums it doesn't work many other machines. I had to go back to an older version.

So HP are you listening? We're not even talking quality here but the stuff you sell is hardly usable.

It has now a serial port but no such cable can be bought and the manual doesn't say a word about it. I still feel like I've bought beta stuff. Well really I just bought it out of curiosity. My biggest worries are regarding future software enhancements. HP doesn't seem to have any plans on this. They seem to be extremely reluctant on spending any non recurring costs.

What is your opinion will HP ever develop any new stuff? I'm a HP fan but I must admit that TI are a lot more innovative.

Just my 2 cents.
Daniel

Hi Daniel.

I bought my 50G from Samson guys as well a couple of weeks ago.

I had not so much time to explore the new thing, but my impressions

are almost the same as yours: much improved keyboard and tactile feeling

(even though I got some missed keystrokes, especially when pressing a key twice and very fast,

wouldn't think I had to adjust KEYTIME on the 50G...).

The display is definitely more "reddish" than 49G (at least under office light, i.e. neon light).

The contrast of the labels is dramatically improved, and I confirm I had to use a previous version of Conn4x (Version 2.2 build 2353)

to get it work with my Win2000 laptop (never succeded with the 49G+...).

Best regards.
Giancarlo

The default keytime is 1138 (its a little too slow). Try changing it to 500 and your missed keystrokes will disappear. A friend had the same problem with his 50G, and changing the value to 500 solved the issue.

Matt

Hi Matt,

thanks for the hint with keytime. I've thought this setting had no effect on the ARM models. I'll set it to 500.

The 49g+ AUR states this about KEYTIME:

KEYTIME
Type: Command
Description: This command is provided for compatibility with earlier calculators, but does nothing on the hp49g+/hp48gII.

So, does KEYTIME really work, can someone confirm this? Or are we just seeing a placebo effect.

On early versions of the 49g+, the KEYTIME\-> and \->KEYTIME commands did nothing. But because of complaints about the keyboard, their functionality was restored. Since they work on my 49g+, and ROM revision 2.09 is shared by the 49g+ and 50g, I expect that they work on the 50g.

I suppose that these commands didn't work in the 48gII, but whether they've upgraded the ROM for later units, I wouldn't know. As far as I know. the ROM isn't updatable in the 48gII; that is, it really is Read Only Memory, not flash memory.

The KEYTIME value sets the time that a keypress is ignored after a press of the same key. The value is in ticks (8192 ticks = 1 second). The \->KEYTIME command will any accept "real" number or "exact integer", but the value is stored as an integer from 0 through 4096.

I normally use 512 (1/16 second), which works just fine for me.

Regards,
James

PS:

To test whether \->KEYTIME really works, set it to 4096, and press the same key twice in rapid succession. If it's working, only the first keypress will register.

Then set it to 0 and press the same key twice; it should register twice, but if there's a "keybounce" problem, it may register more times.

Finally, set it to something reasonable.

James

Hi Daniel,

> I still feel like I've bought beta stuff.

>

...as usual since after the HP-48 and HP-38G ;-)

That's why I don't waste my time on the calcs after the HP-48.

Regards

Raymond

BTW: I also bought a 50G and 12C anniversary,

but only for the collection, so I'll never know

how good or bad the keyboards are...after all I don't care.

At least both the 50G and the 12C Anniversary

look *much* better than their predecessors (49g+ and 12C Platinum) .
