Pioneer model variations
#1

I'm almost finished with my complete Pioneer collection (all models, colors and variations) and all that remains to find is one variation of the 22S - the later stepped bezel model. I have several flat bezels with the window in front of the LCD but for the life of me, I've yet to see a step bezel. Dave has one in the Museum - so I know they exist. I'd like to take an informal poll of the community at large:

How many of you out there have a 22S with the later step bezel?

How about the same in the 27S?

Also - I've never seen a 21S in the early flat bezel model - anybody ever see one?

I'd really like to establish the rarity of these these variations in the less popular models. "Less popular" meaning at the time they were sold - as most 27S owners I've encountered are like 42S owners - unwilling to switch at any price.

I believe my remaining 22s is a newer, non-window model.

I'll check tonight.

If it's what you want, maybe we can work out a trade. (Goodness knows, you've offered more than your share of free help over the years!)

Great job. Maybe you can give us a summery, which model exists in what variation (display, color, serial, ..)

Thank you, Paul. I'll just remind and thank you that it all started (at least for me) with your contribution of the "Pioneer Internals" article :)

Here's the list of what I've amassed in almost four years, I can plug in the serial numbers later if it is of any use. I'll be interested to know what I'm missing! Chances are I'll never find them but it will be interesting to compare notes.

Hello, Randy --

About a month ago, I "completed" my collection of the Pioneer series (one each of the 11 models), amassed over four years mostly through eBay or eBay-inspired prices. I had already "completed" my collection of the HP-41 series and the Voyager series in a similar manner.

Here are the Pioneers I have:

Model Origin Color Bezel Year
10B Singapore Brown Step 1993
14B USA Brown Flat 1989 50th Anniversary
17B USA Brown Flat 1988
17Bii Singapore Brown Step 1993
20S Indonesia Brown Step 1997
21S USA Brown Step 1989
22S USA Brown Flat 1988
27S Singapore Brown Flat 1990
32S Singapore Brown Step 1990
32Sii Indonesia Black Step 2001
42S Singapore Brown Flat 1989

Also - I've never seen a 21S in the early flat bezel model - anybody ever see one?

My 21S is the earliest recessed ("step") bezel model in the list. Maybe it was a pilot project for the redesign.

Note that I have two 1990 Singapore-made units. One is a "step" 32S; the other is a "flat" 27S -- which is not like either of yours.

Just curious: Is your early USA-made 32Sii one with the fraction-calculation bug? If so, can you give an example? I've found the (sans bug) fraction-conversion capability of the HP-32II to be quite impressive, and would like to know how it was implemented. Only a massive look-up table in ROM would seem feasible, in order to give quick answers.

Thanks,

-- KS

Hi Randy

Wow, this is a cool list of Pioneers... Maybe more than I have. I will try to add production year and original box (my favorite, yes) to your list. Just give me some time to do this. Also, collect informations of the production year as well. I would like to finally get a full list with time view, which modell was produced in which version during a periode of time. (Do you understand my bad english?)

Just forgot: It would also be really interesting to add ROM versions to your list. I will try to do my best, but I will need your help. Please have a look at your calculators and let us know the ROM versions. I will collect them and try to create a list.

I have a few extras not in your list (difference is marked with a star):

Model Origin Color Bezel
10B Indonesia Brown Flat*
14B USA Brown Step* 50th Anniversary
20S Indonesia Brown Flat*
22S USA Brown Step*

I'm very surprised by the 50th Anniversary 14B being different. I wonder if they had both sorts of faceplate in existence and some were done with one batch and others with the other?
