OT: Casio and Product Liability

I just got a Casio fx-7000GA graphing calculator. Normally that wouldn't be grist for this particular mill, except for something that caught my eye on the first page of the machine's manual:

Note that the manufacturer assumes no responsibility
for any injury or loss incurred while using this manual.

So if I read the manual while driving and have an accident, I can't sue them. If I go blind reading the manual in poor light, they won't pay for my glasses. If I read the manual over and over obsessively and lose my job as a result, they won't employ me.

It's a tough world out there for readers. 8)

You have a point. But some folks can get into an accoident without reading a manual, go blind just like that, and get obssessive just for the pure joy of it. I think Casio is innocent!!!

I got a Casio FX-7000G (new) back in the late 80's in high school. I still have it and manual in mint condition. I used it to do the bills for about 9 years before I retired it and now use something from my HP collection. The 7000G was hard to program but I did find it especially great at statistics and linear regressions. It was pretty good at graphing, too. I think you can buy one now (used, of course) for about $5-10 on Ebay.

I paid $20.00 for mine on eBay.

Actually, posting such a warning can actually increase your liability. It shows that you knew the item was dangerous, yet chose to sell it anyway. Much like posting a "Beware of Dog" sign shows that you knew you had a dangerous animal.
