Connecting 49G+ to Mac
#1

Help!

I use a Macintosh and have been unable to read the manuals contained in the CD that came with the calculator. Everything I have tried so far has failed.

This is what I'd like to do:

1. Download the manuals from somewhere, in PDF format, without having to "install" them by running a PC-only application.

2. Be able to make use of the USB cable that came with the calculator. Sooner or later I'll have to upgrade the OS to a new version!

Help!

This is a zipped version of the PDF manual.

You need on the mac:

Stuffit Expander

and

Acrobat Reader.

That's it.

Both are installed as default applications on OSX. OS 9.1 or later should have them too.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick answer, Gene.

What about issue #1? Any thoughts on how to transfer data between the 49G+ and a Mac?

I use an SD (64 MB SanDisk) with reader that I just purchased from Circuit City. I just finished using it to upgrade my ROM to 1.22. Initially I had some problems using the card in the 49G+ but after having a neighbor reformat the card using Windows 2000 Pro, everything works fine for transferring files between my Mac and the 49G+.

Tom has it right!

I should metion that when I use the "Files" feature on the HP-49G+ I see some garbage files (apparently put there by the Mac). I ignore these and just use the files that I'm interested in.

Thanks for the reply. I've got a question, though -- what is a SD? And how much did you spend on it?

I usually see a .DStore or such and a .Trashes file.

Just keep on moving. Nothing to see here. :-)

SD stands for Secure digital. The card slot in the 49G+ can take SD memory cards or MMC (MultiMedia Cards)...they are the same thing.

64MB cards are about $30. 128MB cards are about $50.

Gene,

around me, (NYC area), 128 Mb generally goes for upwards of $70! The 64 Mb's go for about $50, and the 256 Mb cards for around $90. (Methinks me is getting me pockets picked...)

That's just NYC for you. A friend of mine was paying $1800 a month for a tiny one-bedroom apartment on floor 29 of a building close to the Lincoln Center. I'm talking about 1998 or 1999; I have no idea how much it is now.

Are you guys still paying 25% sales tax? 8^)

You can select other sizes too.

Thanks, Gene. Bookmarked for the coming days when I have to get RAM for a computer I want to put together to replace the clunker I'm typing on now.

Incidentally, I got 256 Mb at $65, but after tax, it's like shipping w/o tax, so the second law of thermodynamics has its revenge... again. (Or, first law, depending on how sanguine a person you are!)

Try this URL on the HP website:

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/manualCategory.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&pagetype=manual&prodId=hp49ggraph351775&lc=en&sw_lang=en&docparent=manual&cat=manual

It goes straight into the section where you can download the manual on PDF.

BTW, try the website: http://www.hp.com/calculators
