You are probably right... halfnuts are more reliable than fullnuts, but they are much less repairable. One thing you might try is to turn off the system timeout timer, light up all the segments that you can (if you have a PPC ROM, run "DT"), and leave the machine on for a few days. I have seen some LCD modules that seem to get lazy when they have not been used for a long time. But this usually affects the whole display or random parts of it. If the problem affects a well defined part of the display (like a top/bottom or left/right half) it is most likely another problem.
