"Classic" HP Calcs
#1

A Comment;

I have noticed that on a few occasions, some postings inquiring about HP48's provoke a remark that this site is chiefly intended for "classic" HP calculators. Hey - lighten up! The HP48 and some of its cousins are entering their second decade of production. Ok, the 48 is not as nostalgic as the 35, but 10+ years should surely qualify as another HP Classic.

PS: If anyone hasn't guessed, X-generation refers to their language. (I refer to some postings and their response)

I suppose I agree, especially for the 48S and 48SX. These still look like HP calcs to me, with blue and orange shift keys, black case etc. The keys are similar to the 15C in feel, but different from the 41. I never liked to look of the 48Gs, and I won't comment about the 49. However, I think the 41 was probably the last HP sold which had special display cases set up in University book stores, with all the optional bits for sale in nice boxes. Owning an HP then (mid 80's and earlier) was special, more than it is now.

Perhaps a true classic HP has an LED display?

Elton (As an aside, why does the 49 need to look like a 'game boy', and would you have one on your desk at work?)

Lets Face a few facts -

Who uses the CAS & symbolic manipulations on an HP-28 - 48 -49 series calc??

Maybe an answer - a few hard core HP (or TI I suppose) fans (me included) & possibly students.

The continuing market for these types of calcs is students & classroom use (fresh customers every year)

The design & colors of the 49G are a nice break from the drab gray / brown / green / black color schemes used previously in most all HP or TI calcs.

If you don't like the location of the Enter key, reassign it to the X key or elsewhere.

I could go on, but lets not criticize HP for focusing its design efforts on the perceived (and possibly actual)market for there products.

HP always looked at the first family(35-80) as the "classics." These had that nice weight/feel. As you can imagine, the 35 stands tall in Palo Alto, CA.

Joe, I love the 41 and 48. My 35 red dot stays in its original box.
