Needing help with my 48s
#1

My 48s is doing strange things. It started by entering both a 5 and a 6 when I tried to enter only a six. Then it went into a mode where I could not enter a zero. The batteries were low so I inserted a new set. I still get the inability to enter a zero and when I try several times in a row everything locks up.

I have tried all of the tricks on pages 665 and 666 to no avail. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Soak it up to the screen in clean water for a day. Then leave it to dry for a couple of days. If it still doesn't work, go get another one, they aren't expensive these days.

you really mean this? wow, so our calculator can actually take on water also? ;)

And yes, 48S are probably one of the cheaper old hp to get... I would actually get the 48G or GX if you don't want to get the 50G

IMO, the first bit of advise is incorrect, the second, spot on.

A water bath will do nothing, you'll need the vibration of an ultrasonic cleaner and a surfactant cleaning agent to get the offending bits of conductive material out of the key dome areas. In the end, you may get a few more months or years of use out of the unit but ultimately, it is time to replace.

worked once for me, after battery leakage. Not saying will necessarily fix it.

Worked for me as well, after the cat spilled a flower vase with fertlizer liquid over my 48SX 12 yrs ago. I flushed it thoroughly in running water, shook out most of the water and dried it in an oven(!) It still works perfectly...

[Of course, desiccation in a convection oven, NEVER in a microwave oven :)]
