I'd like to know what the deal is with putting directional buttons on a device that clearly doesn't need them.

I don't know about the HP-8s, but many low-end calculators have the four directional keys to enable the user to recall recent entries, edit them, and execute them again.

I can't imagine that a typical user would benefit from that capability very much.
