Hi, my HP 48GX is somewhat loose and squeaky at the left-side seam between the top and bottom halves. I'm wondering where the screws are located so I could tighten them. My guts tell me that the screws are located under the metal plate with all the characters printed on it. If that's the case, then I probably won't be able to access the screws and fix the problem. :'( What do y'all think?

There are no screws. The HP48 is held together with plastic latches and heat rivets. Han Duong prepared a really nice set of instructions on how to open, but I cannot find them or a link at the moment. Try this as a start. edit - found link: http://www.math.uiuc.edu/~handuong/hp48/open/

Very common on older made in Singapore units. It has to do with the plate under the keyboard. Unless you disassemble it and then glue it back together with LOTS of glue in the outside edge seams, you'll accomplish nothing. Honestly, it is one 48 attribute that is best left as-is.

Oh my, those are some disturbing images, shivers literally went down my spine. Thank you, Jeff O., for the link, I appreciate it, that's really helpful and eye-opening. And I agree with you, Randy, I think I'll just leave my calculator as it is; I love it too much to commit anything that would scratch or indent it in any way. Thank y'all for the responses. |
