HP-41 broken plastic display - how to fix?
#1

The calc is otherwise perfect (41CX halfnut), but the display plastic window is broken.

Can I remove it with a very sharp knife without opening up the calc (I believe it has never been opened before) and fasten a replacement from another broken calc?

In a word: No.

It is crystal polystyrene, very hard to cut with a knife, it is quite brittle which is why it broke. You'd also destroy the LCD in the attempt. Further, the window was installed from the rear of the assembly and ultrasonically welded into place. Any attempt to remove/replace from the front would be an absolute disaster.

The fact that it is a halfnut posses the major problem in that the keyboard/logic board would need to be removed from the unit to properly replace the window. Even after the board is out, there is a fair amount of just plain luck involved in getting both the broken window out and the replacement removed in usable condition.

It can be done but is not something I would agree to do without a complete understanding that it may not be a successful transplant :(
