Cleaning HP 15C
#1

Is it possible to remove the circuit board from the HP 15C calculator so one can get at the keys to clean them? It appears the case pins that hold the board are fused to retain the board. I would like to clean the lint, dirt, and grime from around and under the keys. How does one do this?

Yes, it is possible to remove the PCB from a Voyager case,

but this will always mean cutting the heat stakes which hold

the PCB and upper case together.

I disassembled Voyager calcs several times,

and I don't recommend removing the PCB to impatient people;-)

Cutting the stakes in itself is not the problem,

except that it's very many stakes,

but one has to be VERY CAREFUL not to cut the stakes to near at the base,

since you'll need some material for reassembling the unit,

and not to cut into the contact lines on the PCB.

So you may see this can't be done many times with the same unit,

and after all I'd rather recommend to clean the unit from the outside as far as possible,

and at some time try to get an unused unit for the collection;-)

Well, you certainly don't remove the logic board to do it... that would be tantamount to calculator murder.

Remove the batteries, clean from the outside, the same way the dirt got applied. Some canned air helps along with Windex or some other window cleaner. Wipe well, don't saturate and don't put the batteries back in until it has had a chance to dry overnight.
