VIEW on HP 41CV
#1

Hello, I recently bought a 41 CV on Ebay. Today I noticed a behavior which I found somewhat strange. When I use the VIEW function, it just recalls the contents of a register in the same way as RCL. The recalled value then remains in the stack! The manual says that it should show the contents without disturbing the stack, so I was expecting something like VIEW on the 35S. Is this behavior normal?
Thanks, Alfredo

Hi, Alfredo;

I use HP41 calculators since the 80's (University) and I cannot remember such behavior. As you mention, VIEW only shows register contents without actually disturbing stack contents.

I am not a collector, although having many HP calculalors, but I would keep this one. I had an HP31E (Spice) that filled registers 1, 2 and 3 with numbers (10, 100 and 1000) after performing autotest ([STO][ENTER]). I have never seen another Spice doing such thing...

My 2¢.

It definitely should not disturb the stack. I know a fair bit about the innards of the 41, and can't really even imagine a fault that could cause that.

As a test, try something like:

5 STO 00

4 ENTER 3 ENTER 1 ENTER 2 x<>y -- fill stack with known values

VIEW 00 -- should show 5

RDN -- should show 2

RDN -- should show 3

RDN -- should show 4

RDN -- should show 1

RDN -- should show 2 again

Luiz,

My 31E after the self test shows -8,8,8,8,8,8,8,8,8,8, and 0 in all the registers.

This does seem abnormal, but are you absolutely sure that the VIEW'ed value is being placed on the stack? As Eric Smith suggested, try loading each location of the stack with a known value, then VIEW a different value. The VIEW'ed value is displayed, but should not be placed on the stack. CLx will then revert the display to the x-register value.

BTW, VIEW doesn't work exactly the same on the HP-41 versus on the HP-35s/33s/32SII/32S. On the latter set of models, ENTER will place the VIEW'ed value into the x-register. On the HP-41, ENTER works in conventional fashion, copying the x-register to the y-register.

Hi, Trent;

this 31E shows the eight-full display as well after self test, and it works fine. After turning it on, all four registers contain 0,00 as expected (no continuous memory). Unfortunately it is no longer with me, and I cannot check the serial #... Sorry! I thought it would be better leaving it with a collector, though.

Best regards.

You are right, I checked again today with your example and I got the correct behavior. I must have pressed the wrong key yesterday. What puzzles me is that I remember that the viewed value somehow was inserted into the stack...

Just wondering: Perhaps you were in USER mode and RCL was assigned to VIEW ...
