HP-01 Glass Crystal - Bryan Blackburn - 04-15-2006

I am in the process of restoring a stainless steel HP-01 watch that, unfortunately, has a damaged glass crystal. I have contracted with an OEM watch company to have a few replacement crystals custom made as samples, but this is an expensive process. The priciest aspect is the possibility of having the ‘Hewlett-Packard’ name professionally silk-screened onto the glass.

The professional silkscreen has the added complication of requiring written trademark usage permission from HP. Has anyone had experience with HP on a similar issue? If so, were they agreeable?

I am at a decision point: I can spread the cost around and have a relatively large number of crystals made with professional lettering, or I can have just a few made without the lettering, and then just do that part myself (with all the hassle that goes with).

Is there anyone else who would like to share the cost of professionally manufactured and lettered replacement mineral glass crystals for the HP-01? What price are you willing to pay? In how many would you be interested? Example: If ten crystals were made, they would cost an estimated $220 each. If a hundred are made instead, the cost will be about $25 each. Economy of scale! (Un-screened can be had for much less.)

If you are interested, you may contact me directly. If there is little or no interest, I will make what I want and keep them all! :) See my restoration progress at: http://www.bytecollector.com/hp-01.html

Making 10 for $2200 or 100 for $2500 is a no brainer... go for the extras. They WILL find a home. I had a very similar decision when making some HP-97 printer gears. I had 100 made and am now gearless.

Dear Bryan,

I am tryin to get a watch crystal custom made as well but not similar at all to your project. May I ask where you are having your crystal made? Maybe they can help me too.

thanks
