I have a 48GX and a 48SX, and I have had a 48G+. Was there ever just a 48, with no letters?

The 48GII is the 49G+ minus the secure card slot and some RAM; and has the black cable connector instead of the USB cord. So the 48GII really belongs in the 49 family.

Is the 48GII cable similar to the serial type as the ones used for the 48/49?

Nope. It is a USB connector on the end, and a 9 on the other. The cable has a little circuit board inside of the 9 pin connector that takes power from the 9 pin and does some conversions on the signal in transit. I have not heard of anyone sucessfully using the cable with anything but a computer.

Thanks. Since you're a 49+ user, do you have one of later serial numbers, or in short, how's your keyboard / general build quality?

I have one of the later ones (2005). The keyboard is as good as on a 48. However the paint job is not very good and the labels look a bit fuzzy. The best would be to try before you buy.

Thanks. I went through several 49+s a while back, a real disappointment.
Your "try before buy" has me laughing, no where I know ( around where I live) lets you try a calculator before you buy as they're all in sealed packages. But actually, it's a great idea. If models were out on display for potential buyers to play with, it would help quite bit.

The Office Depots around here have a lot of calculators out on display so you can play with them before buying. However, they're mostly TI's. The only HP I remember for a fact being out was a 12C.
I played with a 33s at WalMart before buying by pushing the buttons through the plastic (not an idea situation, but it works). That wouldn't work for a 49G+ even if they were available in stores (but without demo copies), since they're packaged without their batteries connected. I've never seen a 49G+ in any physical store in any shape or form.
