48-series question about downloads from PC - Stephen Easterling - 09-22-2005

I am jumping the gun asking this because I have not seriously sat down to program my recently-acquired 48GX (having too much fun with some older HPs now), but my question is this:

I would like to dump tables of data into my 48GX from PC. Can this be done using something like WordPad, Word, Excel if I properly delimit that data. Ideally, two - four columns of numbers available to the user at the touch of a button.

Thanks in advance for any advice or direction on this. I originally bought a 49G+ thinking it would be better suited for this, but I hated the keypad and sold it. That's when I went for a 48GX and bought a memory card (and other goodies for it).

The files are best written on a "text editor", but a "word
processor" will work as long as you save the file as plain text,
to avoid having word processor control codes and sequences added
to the file. I don't know about Excel.

I suggest first uploading a variable from the calculator to the
PC, to see how the transfer header should look.

"ASCII" mode transfers to/from the 48GX can be done with Kermit,
but assuming a recent version of MS Windows, the
HPComm ("HP PC Connectivity Kit")
may be easier.

By installing the Xmodem Server library that's included with the

Conn4x ("hp48gII and hp49g+ PC Connectivity Kit")
, you can
use Conn4x for "text" transfers, which are very similar to Kermit
"ASCII" transfers, and should be faster.

Try some searches of the newsgroup

strings may be "transfer header", "ASCII transfer" and

perhaps an appropiet Excel Add-In is what would serve your needs best. Have a look at http://www.hpcalc.org/hp48/pc/misc/hp48xla.zip. I've tried it myself with a 49G and it worked great.

Have fun
