Deluge of fake buyers in response to advert on MoHPC - John - 10-16-2004

Hi,

Just had my fifth e-mail in 2 days offering to buy my HP, payment by cheque from reputable person, shipping to be arranged by shipping company, mostly from Nigeria, etc. etc. all in response to one ad on the MoHPC Classified Ads forum. I guess I need better filtering software on my e-mail!

Do these people have robots that scan the web for adverts?

On the web its just as much 'seller beware' as 'buyer beware'. Every week there are more stories in the news about people being conned in this way, I reluctantly suppose this is a strong reason for the growth of Paypal, it may seem to cost a lot but you do have protection against fraud (allegedly).

Rant over,
John

John,

When placing an ad on this forum, use a fake email that includes words, like NOSPAM, in the email address. Include a reminder for legit website members to remove that extra word from the pseudo-email. Do this and you will not be bothered by eCriminals.

Do you get e-mails from people trying to get you to take their money and put in the bank? I do from time to time and they get immediately dumped in the trash can.

Sadly it is too easy for fakers to fake legitmacy while scamming others.

Re: OT Paypal rant - JDH - 10-18-2004

I agree about the scammers in the classifieds area, I'm selling my unused HP 42s at the moment (hopefully sold soon!!!), I think I had emails from about 5 to 10 scammers. When I sell things I tend to have a junk mail email rather than my normal email address which I can get rid of if the junk mail gets really bad. I think next time I post an add I'll try the NOSPAM in the email, I didn't bother as I assumed they where manually reading them.

One easy way to tell how genuine they are is to see whether they are happy with your terms of sale, and secondly whether they know anything about what they are tryng to purchase!!! Generally the scammers emails are so similar in the wording you would have to be pretty silly to be fooled with it. Most of the emails I've receiver I haven't even bothered replying too as I can tell they are not are not real buyers.

Re: OT Paypal rant - unspellable - 10-19-2004

I, and some other people leave spaces (as above) in the email address for the repsondent to remove as a counter to atumated whazzits.

I'm thinking of selling an HP38G. If any one here is interested, I'd give them a legitiamtae price, but I'm tempted to post it in the ads for $470 just to see what sort of replies I'd get.

Would you actually sell it to the guy if he actually offered an actual $470???

where did you get that, I thought you could not waive this option. In fact PayPal says that if the buyer reverses a credit card payment, they will recover the money from the seller. (section 5.1 Credit Card Funded Payments).

You're right, they've changed wording of the policy (last changed September 2004). I deleted my post to be fair since I was wrong.

Phewww, the only reason I use PayPal is that I can pay using my credit card and have the security of having my credit card company deal with unreliable sellers.

Note though that wise-guys have added their own exclusions:

E.g. surplus-supply-com which includes in their auctions the following disclaimer:

If you opt to use PayPal to pay for your auction purchase, you agree to the following conditions. All items sold by SURPLUS-SUPPLY-COM "the seller¿ and purchased by you "the buyer" are subject to the following terms. This contract agreement supercedes any and all agreements that you may have previously made with PayPal. WE, OUR PARENT, SUBSIDIARIES, EMPLOYEES AND OUR SUPPLIERS PROVIDE OUR PRODUCTS "AS IS" AND WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY OR CONDITION, EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY. WE, OUR PARENT, SUBSIDIARIES, EMPLOYEES AND OUR SUPPLIERS SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF TITLE, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. Under no circumstances may the buyer without prior consent from SURPLUS-SUPPLY-COM seek reversal of any payments made to SURPLUS-SUPPLY-COM by the PayPal payment service. This Agreement is governed by and interpreted under the laws of the state of Texas, U.S. If for any reason you are not in agreement with this contract, please do not use PayPal for your purchase. Recent changes in the PayPal user agreement have made this necessary.

So its buyer beware as usual, although I wish them luck trying to enforce this with a credit card company
