12C with NO Serial Number - Bill in PA - 03-15-2004

Anyone have experience with Hewlett-Packard calculators that do not have a serial number ? I recently acquired a "newer", made in CHINA, 12C that does not have any serial number. Are these prototype models ? Any idea as to rarity or value ? Thank you in advance.

Normally the cases w/o serial numbers stamped in were used for repaired machines where the bottom half of the case had to be replaced for any reason.
However, since these machines won't be repaired nowadays there's a chance that the Stamp-O-Matic simply had a malfunction;-)

A calculator is not a machine.

Calculators are machines - Randy Sloyer - 03-16-2004

According to Webster's:

  • Etymology: Middle French, from Latin machina, from Greek mEchanE (Doric dialect machana), from mEchos means, expedient
  • an assemblage of parts that transmit forces, motion, and energy one to another in a predetermined manner
  • a mechanically, electrically, or electronically operated device for performing a task <a calculating machine> <a card-sorting machine>
