Voyager Key Wear - bill platt - 01-30-2004

Have you noticed that as a voyager is used, its key "spring-click" degrades with time? It is very noticable if you find a really used one and compare it to a never used one. If the machine is worn enough, this degradation can really affect the quality of the user input tactile feedback.

Now, here is the interesting part: if you are using one of these old machines on a desktop, the effect is much worse than it is if you are holding the device in hand, squeezing the buttons with your thumb, against the pressure of fingers on the back. Apparently, one's tactile feedback is much more sensitive when using the hand in a grasping mode.

Regards,

Bill

I notice something on the Voyagers' keyboards: the rubber protection layer may develop holes where the key molded pin press the steel disc. When the key have a hole in the rubber layer they become "loose" and lost its original touch - the steel disks don't loose their spring, as far I can tell. I think that if you replace the rubber it can be restored to the original touch.

Best regards,

Nelson
