WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Alexander Oestert - 12-05-2013 I haven't been around for a while. This erstwhile very cozy HP museum seems to have morphed into the official HP Prime support forum, while the people at HP constantly send me emails assuring me that they still monitor my defective HP 15C LE but actually don't do a thing about it.
Strange world - I'm getting too old for this...
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Walter B - 12-05-2013 Hallo Alexander, Don't despair. The present "Primania" will soon cool down, I guess, when the next new pig runs through our little forum village. Oiiiik!
d;-)
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Maximilian Hohmann - 12-05-2013 Hi!
Quote: I hope it will cool down long before the next pig comes running. When I look into the forum, it's Prime, Prime, Prime from top to bottom - sooner or later the topic must run dry. The thing has only so and so many bytes of ROM and after every single one has gotten it's own thread, there must come a natural end! In the meantime I was able to get a very nice HP-10C for a reasonable price (obvoiusly the Prime distracts the collectors from the vintage pieces ;-) ) closing another gap in my collection.

You mean, you have a complete collection of all HP pocket calculators? Wow! Enviable in a way, but hunting for pieces is an important part of the fun.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Chris Pem10 - 12-05-2013 I'm responsible for some of the Prime noise here; and I guess to some of the more seasoned members here it may seem overwhelming... but enthuaism is enthuaism. I'm looking into hosting an alternative site soon... just not up to speed yet on Amazon hosting services, which forum software to use... blah, blah, blah :) Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Dave Hicks - 12-05-2013 Soon the Prime will have its own forum. Emulators and third party firmware - which caused the last round of "what happened to my forum?" will also have their own forum. The new forum software makes it easy to create additional categories if needed.
Coming soon...
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Michael de Estrada - 12-05-2013 How about you add a filter to the forum that eliminates all these whiner threads. It would definitely free up a lot of space.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Chris Pem10 - 12-05-2013 That will be very useful. Thanks. Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Don Shepherd - 12-05-2013 Great news! Thanks Dave.

Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - db (martinez, ca.) - 12-05-2013 another 1 +
I hope the new software will have a good forum specific search function.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Massimo Gnerucci (Italy) - 12-05-2013 Nice!
I only hope that this seasoned forum won't get revolutionized. Not another phpbb, please. :)

Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Bruce Bergman - 12-05-2013 Chris -- There already is a wiki place, and it's even got spots for the Prime. Go here: Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Bruce Bergman - 12-05-2013 Dave, if you've already got it covered, then great. If not, I would be happy to help. I can get something set up within minutes. Let me know if you need anything. Thanks!

Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - debrouxl - 12-06-2013 The TI-Planet hpwiki contains a number of pieces of information not found on wiki4hp, e.g. about the linking protocol, or firmware upgrades, including third-party modifications to the firmware.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Bruce Bergman - 12-06-2013 Yes, and if I get some time over the holidays, I intend to rectify that situation. :-)

Please, please add unicode support :-)
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Dave Hicks - 12-08-2013 Quote: Oh yes, it's Unicode/UTF-8. This got in gear when Cyrille asked if I could convert the existing forum to Unicode, and after some study, I determined that I could, but the amount of work was sufficient to make me investigate new forums. (For example the documentation on one of the functions used by the current forum says you can call it with unicode, but if any character is >255, it will die. Lovely....)
I've wanted to switch forum software several times but each time there was resistance to some unspecified new thing. But the last time I asked was maybe 5 years ago, and lately I've noticed growing and on-going dissatisfaction with this old software so I think it's time to replace it. The new stuff has been running for a few days. Just getting a little more tuning and adjusting before I invite everyone in. Real soon now...
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Michael de Estrada - 12-08-2013 Will we be able to upload images from our computers now, or will we still need to use linkable sites to do this ?
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Walter B - 12-08-2013 That would ease discussions really a lot but require an equal lot of space on the forum. No idea about the consequences.

Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Michael de Estrada - 12-08-2013 Many other forums that I frequent limit the size or quantity of image files that can be uploaded to prevent abuse. So, you won't have people uploading their entire collections just to brag about them. Edited: 8 Dec 2013, 9:16 a.m.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Dave Hicks - 12-08-2013 Yes the new software allows uploading images. So does the current/old software, but the new software is much more obvious about that since there's an upload button right in the posting form. Also, I'm setting up the new software so everyone gets space by default as opposed to the old software where you had to ask. The new forum will start with 3MB per user. The old forum started with 0 and the largest number on the request form was 2MB, though 4 people have requested and received larger quotas.
Currently we have 52 guest directories with an average use of 0.4MB per "user with directory" and the largest is around 4MB. I expect not having to ask and having the button right on the posting form will substantially increase uploads per user. If it doesn't go up that much, then I might increase the default quota beyond 3MB.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Walter B - 12-08-2013 Dave, I hope you don't regret.

Quote:I started to collect some other models e.g. Commodore PR-100 and TI-58 & 59. Opportunistic "hunting" has given me some interesting pieces, e.g. an early TI-81 without backup battery and an interesting financial calculator, the TI FIA-10. There is always something more to hunt :-) Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Massimo Gnerucci (Italy) - 12-08-2013

Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Maximilian Hohmann - 12-08-2013 Quote: Yes. I even started collecting Swatches in the meantime since prices for HP calculates went through the roof!
And just today I "won" an auction for a HP-34C. Another gap filled and the "30 series" (I can't and don't want to remember the stupid names they give their calculators - what's wrong with numbering things that are built to deal with numbers?) finally completed. Thank you Prime, without you, I wouldn't have gotten it for a price I can afford :-)
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - giancarlo - 12-08-2013 Hello Dave,
In this way a hp97 thread would have the same dignity of a Prime one. I think that the number of threads would reduce as soon as bug(s) will be solved and as soon as we feel comfortable with its approach to mathematics and programming. Thanks
Giancarlo
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Massimo Gnerucci (Italy) - 12-08-2013 I personally like to display the messages individually, I would rather prefer to have some sort of filter available. Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Dave Hicks - 12-08-2013 If you go to search/personalize and set List Messages to Compressed, then it will do what (I think) you are asking.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Marcus von Cube, Germany - 12-09-2013 Dave, will all messages and accounts be migrated?
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Garth Wilson - 12-09-2013 I'm a moderator on three different forums using phpBB version 3, the most active being forum.6502.org. I'm an administrator on two. There's very little I don't like about phpBB. It does have a ton of options for the administrator to set up though, and it could be that something you don't like could be corrected there. There are so many of these options, in different categories, that it can be hard to find the one you want. That doesn't mean it's not there though. Edited: 9 Dec 2013, 8:54 p.m.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Dave Hicks - 12-09-2013 No. Migration will be of the manual type.
Re: WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum? - Massimo Gnerucci (Italy) - 12-10-2013 If phpBB is able to replicate the clean, unobtrusive, message sorting and presentation options of the current software then that's ok for me.
