Walter; i had looked at that a while back but i hate throwing my credit card info around on the internet if i can avoid it. i realize that using my visa card is better and safer than say paypal or mastercard but is there a way that's already established to get the printed manual in the states and pay using a personal check without a huge difference in price? i realize that shipping from Germany is expensive, otherwise i'd be doing my beer shopping in Cologne.

What we need is for the credit card processors to give us a selection of one-off account numbers. If a site gets compromised, Oh Well! That number's been used already!
What we have is stored-value cards under the Visa and Mastercard marques which I have seen in drug stores. Grab one, add value to it (in cash if you like) then use that card.
There will be fees, naturally. But if the card gets compromised, you're out only what you have stored.
DISCLOSURE: I've never used one.

Discover and at least some Bank of America accounts offer such an option.
I've never tried any of these, but conversely in many years of on-line buying and banking, I've never been compromised.

The (guaranteed) Euro cheque has. But you can still write a normal cheque if you like. And I still do at least every couple of years ;)
