Hi all!

I need to create (if possible) a ROM image from my HP42S, in way to enjoy it with a windows emulator.
I don't remember now where I read that it is possible without any hardware opening, just having another IR port suited calculator (HP50g?), trough the IR port, but actually it was not so clear for me that procedure.
I f somebody could help me I'll appreciate.

PS: I'm not sure but I think that even if a copyrighted thing, for the owner of the hardware to get a copy of the ROM (obvoiusly only for his own pourposes)should be legal, isn't it?

Yes, I'm indeed a big fan of all kind of emulators, and I'm collecting them like others do with real calculators. But my hobby is definitely much cheaper than buying real machines, and so my collection very big and quite complete. :-)

I have the poleasure to have been t least a few time in Austria when I lived and worked in a northern region of our italian country, years ago, bordering with your Kärnten.

Hi Franz,

this is interesting. I dumped the rom of my HP42S years ago using an HP48G as an IR receiver. Now I would like to compare my ROM image with the one you posted the link to. But I can't remember how to convert the packed format (the one in the link) to the unpacked one (which I have). I am sure there was a tool to do that, but can't remember. Would you happen to know how to do this?

Well Harald, although I've never had such an 'dumped' ROM (because I don't have a real 42s), but I guess this could be done with CAPC2BIN.EXE, which you can find on Christoph's site in this file:

Right page, but wrong tool. ;-)

Use "Emu2rom.exe" for converting from the unpacked to the packed and "Rom2Emu.exe" for converting from the packed to the unpacked format please. Both files can be found in the http://hp.giesselink.com/Pcuti/FILETOOL.ZIP package.

Hi Franz,

just edited my posting above, the answer was how to convert a packed to an unpacked one. I suggested the opposite tool.

To the program cap2bin.exe. The captured data isn't the pure raw data of the ROM image, it also contain block no. and checksums very similar to the XModem protocol. So the program cap2bin.exe strip off the HP48 binary header and the HP48 string object wrapper and finally decode and check the downloaded data from the file. On invalid block no. or wrong checksum, the program stops converting with an error.

it must have been about 10 years ago when I did the rom dump, so all I can remember is being sat at the desk with my 42s and 48g for quite a while - but not the tools I used.

However, thanks to your great emulator Christoph, it was worth the effort, as I regularly use the emulator :)

For nostalgic feelings, I think you done the ROM dump with JFG's description in HP-42S: New Facts at the HP Articles forum. Somebody told me, that it took him about 2 or 3 hours to made a ROM dump by this way.

And you're right, the article was published 10 year ago!

I had a look at my Emu42 archive. My first Emu42 alpha version v0.01a has the file date March 1st, 2002 and Emu42 v1.00 has been published on August 26th, 2004 to the public.

How much time I used to have when I was a student.... ;)

I used your description to dump the ROM image of my HP-42S and I still think that was the coolest program I've ever used on that calculator.
