Right, thanks to a typo, I am now proud owner of a HP71B - Harald - 05-08-2012

I should pay more attention when typing numbers into my bid-tool....
Just bought an 71B for more than I wanted. Hope it at least is nice for the 251,- Euros I have to pay :)

That is pricey but not overly so. Great looking machine!!!

Recently, I bought two items:

A 71B near mint with a 32K RAM in the card reader.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/110872900019?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

I got a better deal than you because of the RAM. But you paid a fair price.

And spent $5,000 on a Nakamichi Mint Turntable (not calc related)

Well, my intention was to spend a maximum of 209, but I typed 290 instead. Lucky it didn't go all the way :)
There are currently cheaper ones on ebay USA at "buy it now" prices. But you are right, they are not masively cheaper.

Cheers,
Harald

Hello!

It looks nice. AND it has two 32k RAM modules installed. You can easily sell each of those for 100+ Euros which brings the price for the calculator below one hundred Euros.

Enjoy your new toy!
Max

TWO 32Ks I did not see those. If true this is a GREAT deal!

Re: Right, thanks to a typo, I am now proud owner of a HP71B - Harald - 05-08-2012

Honestly, I did not know they are worth that much.

Thanks for cheering me up :)

Are you German?

Re: Right, thanks to a typo, I am now proud owner of a HP71B - Harald - 05-08-2012

Yes. Why?

Re: Right, thanks to a typo, I am now proud owner of a HP71B - John W Kercheval - 05-08-2012

In Germany the HP71 is revered. Please add "Von" as a prefix to your last name. Also drink dark beer.

Wow!

Nice turntable!

There are not too many audiophiles on this site. And any time I've risen my head on an audiophile subject, I've been hit by the "everything sounds the same" and "you cannot possibly hear any difference" standard answers.

Still, I love tube amps, electrostatic headphones, vinyl and SACD.

dark beer? Isn't that's a U.K. phenomenon (a.k.a. meal in a glass). IIRC German beer is pale stuff that goes well with sausages.

Audiophiles - Steve Leibson - 05-08-2012

What matters, Jose, is that you hear the difference. I don't, but then it's not me spending the money.

Re: Right, thanks to a typo, I am now proud owner of a HP71B - John W Kercheval - 05-08-2012

Thanks the turntable is actually inexpensive.

Two systems:

1) Tubed system is Jadis (reference)

2) Solid state system is Krell.

To give you an idea of priceology here : the JA800 power amps in the Jadis were $89,000 not cheap. The cabling in the reference system is about $18,000.

But the wrong forum to discuss audio. You can write to me privately of you wish. But I do not wish to clog the forum with off-topic posts.

Best,

John

I once intended to bid 18 euro on some random thing, I think it was a USB cable for something.
I entered 18,00 in my bid tool, but apparently it only recognizes dots as decimal divider. So instead of bidding 18,00 (or of telling me I had entered an illegal character) the system bid 1800 euro for me.
I too was lucky that the auction ended at about 21... Imagine if there had been a "bidding war" on that cable! :)

Looks like a good buy: 2 memory modules and HP-IL seem to come with it. And no taxes. :-)

Re: Right, thanks to a typo, I am now proud owner of a HP71B - Marcus von Cube, Germany - 05-09-2012

Dominic, you should try Schwarzbier, it's delicious !

John, the "von" doesn't make a big difference any more.

Don't sell the memory modules, install the MATH.LEX file in one of them! You'll need HP-IL equipment for this but it's doable.

Well, not so off-topic. It's interesting to know a little about other contributors' interests. I mean: short messages like yours are welcome in my opinion; opening a full thread to discuss audio would certainly be not adequate.

And, BTW, the prices you mentioned are high enough to start a discussion about financial calcs, amortization methods or just plain scientific notation; all proper topics here! :-)

Or Westmalle, from neighboring Belgium:

The usual caveat applies: don't drink and derive :-)

Ok, try this one about the golden-ears stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYTlN6wjcvQ . One of the humorous highlights is to hear him tell about a test where he had a solid-state amplifier and a tube amplifier side by side and an A-B switch, and asked a room full of engineers and audiophiles which one sounded best. The engineers mostly chose the solid-state amp, while the goled-ears people chose the tube amp. The thing about it is that both switch positions went to the solid-state amp, and cords to the tube amp (which was non-op, even though the filaments were glowing) were merely stapled to the back. Later he goes into many tests so you can hear for yourself the effect of phase changes, effective number of bits, and a lot of other things. YouTube uses lossy audio data compression, but he gives you the URL to download the raw, uncompressed wave files. After working with the professional recording equipment in school and other professional studios, nothing impresses me anymore.

HP71B

Sweet! I have one myself. Got to get around to playing with it more.

Gerson; I would have expected to see pepsi (or coke) and beer mixed by someone using a TI, but an hp48? Que barbaro! Have you ever tried Anchor Steam Beer?

Re: Right, thanks to a typo, I am now proud owner of a HP71B - Gerson W. Barbosa - 05-11-2012

Dennis,

The beers were opened only on the next day. They were a gift from some in Belgium I sent an HP manual to. I hardly drink beer, but these were really tasty. I fear Anchor Steam Beer is not easily found here, judging by what I read (if you can read Spanish then you can read that also).
The funny thing in the picure is the fact that I was drinking Pepsi in a coke glass. I switched to Pepsi light when coke light virtually disappeared from the shelves here and was replaced by coke zero, which contains sodium cyclamite (at least here). Then it was the other way around: I drank coke in pepsi glasses.
