University of Florida has indeed dropped CS, but...

[Note to readers, 1:15pm Monday 23 April: many commenters have correctly pointed out that the University Athletic Association, which funds athletics at UF, maintains a separate budget from the University of Florida. The UAA Director reports to the President of UF.]

Florida could save even more money to use on it's football program by following the brave lead of Kansas & Tennessee. They can stop wasting money on teaching evolution too.

At least you still get a degree in Golf and Sports Turf Management, American Indian and Indigenous Studies, or Women's Studies.

They've
tried that in Florida, too.

Seems they have to focus on the really important topics. What shall US-American people live from in 20 years from now? Obviously football. Man was *created* for it ...

That's why he was given _two_ feet and only _one_ brain.

This pretty much confirms what I though all along: UF is a jock university. What a shame that science has to be cut for the quick bucks.

In principle you're right but I think we talk about a game where two padded shoulders are more important than two feet ;-) since the story plays in Florida. Still only one brain maximum though.

The really big shame here is that college football generates untold millions of dollars every year for universities and the "student" athletes see none of this money. The supposedly top notch educations they receive don't even come close to the dollars they generate for their schools. The administrators then get on board with the NCAA and write draconian rules to prevent them from touching a single cent. Makes me wonder when they will drop the ruse of football as a "student" activity and just become professional sport clubs.

even worse, a significant percentage are injured in the pursuit, and see *nothing* for their efforts.

Well, at least it's better than teaching them investment banking.

Re: OT: Florida drops CS for football - Palmer O. Hanson, Jr. - 04-24-2012

Many years ago there was an article in the New Yorker about Donna Shalala when she was president of the University of Wisconsin. She did a study of the connection between college athletics (and football in particular) and alumni giving. It showed that alumni who supported the athletics programs also supported non-athletic activities. Alumni who didn't support football didn't support anything else either. Guess which college president decided that her university would strongly support athletics?

I'm not sure there is something to teach, really. An internship in Palermo, Sicily maybe...
