WP-34S Questions - Matt Agajanian - 03-19-2012

Hello all.

If I were to get a 34S, what steps are involved? Do I need to buy a calculator from HP first? Can I use a Macintosh with OS/X 10.4.11 to flash the ROM as well as other computer-based operations that are connected with the 34S?

Thanks

Okay. Got it.

A 10.4 MacOSX computer will not permit flashing directly. Maybe with a VMWare/Parallels XP virtual machine or any other tool to run Windows and still access to an USB port.

A MacOSX flashing tool should be available in a few weeks but I do not plan on supporting Tiger, only Leopard and more recent.

Has has already been pointed out, the flashing process need three items:

  1. An HP 20b or 30b (the latter being preferable)
  2. A cable to be ordered from Gene Wright
  3. A serial connection from a Windows (virtual) PC.
You may find a friend to help you with the last item.

Can't you run Wine or something similar on a Mac? It works great with mySamba on Linux, and it's much lighter and faster than a virtual Windows environment...

I' not aware of a free Wine port for the Mac that is easy to install (you can compile one for yourself), just a commercial version. Since I have to rely on Windows in too many situations of my job, I decided to install Parallels on my Mac. It works for me.
