16 segment Led display would mimic a HP-41 display? - Giuseppe Marullo - 11-11-2009

Hi all,
just out of curiosity, is there anyone that tried to mimic HP-41 display "feeling" using LED displays?

I need some form of output, since I have to mess with led display anyway and I would like something more cool that the expensive serial 5x7 matrices you see today.

It seems somewhat easier to find 16 segment instead of 14 segment that should be the most similar used on the 41.

Any advice?

Giuseppe Marullo

PS: no, I don't plan to emulate a 41 on a fpga, even if...

Hi.

How about using LiteOn's LTP-4323G (Alphanumeric 16seg. LED display) or LTP-3784G (14seg.) and Maxim's MAX6945 (LED-driver/Key-scanner) ?

However, if its cost won't be a matter, I'd like to use Avago's
HDSP-2503 or HDSP-0962 for industrial application,

for the feel of former HP's reliable instruments :-)

(I like VFD display of HP|Agilents's
34401A or 53131A and so on by the way.)

Exactly, I wanted to know if 16 segment would make a difference compared to 14 segment. I think there is another nuisance, no 14 or 16 digit display I am able to find has the comma, just the dot.

Nice, but expensive as you said and while easy to interface you need to have a char rom anyway, so they are not straightforward as it seems at first glance.

I prefer Leds, but just because of their tolerance to mechanical abuse, VFDs are great.

Or; there's the form over function approach to LED usage. I think there is enough LED light here to keep even Norm content. Yet i wonder if it will have bugs. And what if i find i want a landscape format or later wish for a "memory lost"?
