HP 100LX and CF cards - Chris Foley - 05-10-2009
Hello,
I'm trying to expand the memory of my HP 100LX with a PCMCIA + CF card (Viking).
I don't manage to format the A drive on my pocket, I get this "Format not supported on drive A" error message.
I did format this card on my laptop (FAT16) but I still don't see the volume in the Windows Explorer.
Is it something wrong I'm doing or should I get another brand as a CF card (SunDisk for instance)?

Sometime ago I tested a CF with PCMCIA adapter in my HP 200 LX (may be different in -100 LX), without any special work. You mentioned not seeing the volume in Windows Explorer, which suggests a problem with the card or the adapter, since the LX 100 seems non-related to this problem...

There's a lot of information about this here. Most of this is about the 200LX but at least some cards will work on the 100LX too.

How big is the card? You more than likely need the Acecard driver, though I'm having a hard time digging up a working link at the moment.
Install the driver, reboot, and format. I've had to use that for anything 512MB and up so far. I found a 256MB PNY card over the weekend, and that one works fine on my 200LX without it.

As stated above, 256 MB is the maximum for CF cards in the (1/2)00LX w/o this driver. It is recommended not to throw away those old PCMCIA cards (8 MB FAX cards as an example) and use them as a backup for a "clean" install of your C: drive (naturally including a proper config.sys & autoexec.bat combo that do start with the Acecard driver).

Hello,
I forgot to mention: it is a 256MB CF.
So I shouldn't need a driver.
The thing is, have no way to download the driver on the pocket (I don't own a cable), I was expecting to install everything on the PCMCIA + CF card with my laptop before using it with the HP 100LX.
It seems I have no solution :-(

You do have a solution and it was mentioned above.
You need to format the flash card and have it visible in Windows before you go any further, otherwise you are just wasting your time.
Try reformatting the card in a camera as this can often clear problems that Windows gets stuck on. Then reformat in Windows. Then try in the 100LX.
I've used a PCMCIA adaptor + CF card in my 200LX for years. In fact it is "only" a 16Mbyte card which shows just how long ago I bought it.
