I have a question for those who have taken any/all parts of the CFA exam.

I am trying to decide between using the HP12c on the exam or the TI BAII+. I am very comfortable and proficient in the use of the 12c, as I used it throughout my MBA studies, but have been shown by coworkers that it rounds certain TVM calculations. The BAII+ also the preferred calculator of the Schweser review people.

Would it be worth it to me to go with learning a new calculcator in the BAII+, or should I just stick with the 12c? I was given a BAII+ through my job, so I do have both. I just don't use the BAII+.

I'm a video lecturer for Allen Resources, a CFA exam review company. In fact, if you purchase their materials, I'm on CD #1 showing how to use the 12c vs. the BAII Plus.

Both have their pluses and minues.

12c: RPN, you're already familiar with it. But, it rounds "n" calculations.

BAII+: Has combinations and permutations (that are a pain with only a x! function). Has "worksheet" entry for cash flows and statistics. This is a big time saver if you need to check for a mistake.

Answer is it depends. RPN is worth A LOT. The BAII+ has more functionality than the 12c, but you probably wouldn't use it on the CFA exam anyway.

Feel free to email if you'd like to discuss this in more detail or reply here again and I'll see what I can do.

Gene,

Thank you for your response. I have worked through the questions where the 12c produces the rounded "n" calculations. I have found that if you just select the number of periods closest to what the 12c produces, then that is the right answer. I have never taken the CFA exam before, but it does say on the CFA Institute website that this is taken into account on the exam answers.

Thanks again,

Brian
