Sure, that the reason why i said to him :
"Ok, I take your calculator, but only for a loan .... only for a loan for a long time ...."
I would like to show him the power of this calculator, and after to give it to him again. But I am only used to use a HP41C and a HP32SII.
And the power of the HP48GX is too for me !!!!
I know that he bought it a few years ago and didn't use it a lot. He knows that I enjoy using old HP calculators, but this one is maybe too recent ....

I'd have to concur with Arnaud - the capabilities of the HP-48GX are amazing. I bought one back in the spring, because it was looking like it would be the last decent RPN/RPL calculator out of HP. It was initially overwhelming, compared to my HP-25, HP-15, and HP-32SII. But stick with it, and before you know it you'll be loading libraries, adding RAM cards, etc. Much to my wife's chagrin, I use mine as a PDA (see hpcalc.org). I don't need no stinkin' stylus!

I gave mine away (actually, loaned indefinitely). For a college math student, the 49g series is MUCH better... symbolic integration, exact answers and superior speeds amongst other improvements come in handy. True it doesn't have the huge, oddly placed enter key that you guys live for, but that and the crappier keyboard don't really bother me all that much. I guess I'm too young to appreciate the 48gx (or any calculator that doesn't do all the work for me ;)

I do the same with my 49g+ (and did with older models); in fact, I cut slits into the case so I can carry it on my belt... it's a great organizer, and I never know when I'll need to play some freecell

VPN replies to the above text: no, the 49G is not just the 48GX+MK+Erable+ALG48, since A) the programs are newer versions specially fitted to the 49G, which has them seamlessly *integrated* into the OS. B) There is that big non-volatile User Flash and the "ROM" can be upgraded, too.

I actually bought the PIM card for my 48GX. Thinking about it now I really don't know why, As you can load software that does the same thing. The card was also quite expensive for what it does. I guess my thought was that with the card I wouldn't use any of the RAM for the PIM program.

AFAIK, the RAM for Sparcom's PIM software needs to be all "merged" memory, i.e., not bank switched. 256 KB is not that much memory! Also, the sorting routine for the contact directory seems to be quite inefficient memory-wise. IIRC, the manual says it requires as much free memory as the directory takes for the alphabetical sorting to take place correctly. My memo section, which sorts also, crashed once and now I keep most of my Notes in the native tree as "notes" programs.
FYI, the calender portion was basically bundled onto the HP 48SX serial interface diskette.
I'm not recommending this PIM to new users for serious use today; but back over a decade ago, it was quite impressive. Much better than the HP 41 Time Module, which of course goes back another ten years and was itself quite impressive in its heyday. :-)

At the time the only RAM cards I knew about were from HP. We all know what they cost(ouch).
I didn't know about the Klotz RAM cards. I will most likely get a 1 meg card from them and then just....I don't know what I will do with the PIM card. Throw it in my old hardware box I guess.

I expect that that goes back to before there was an hpcalc.org. Reading a book, the Goodies Disks (via snail mail) from EduCalc, a long-distance by-the-minute phone call to a BBS, Do-It-Myself, or buying a floppy disk or ROM card was how I got programs. Considering the prices for "Genuine HP" RAM cards, some of the "Write-Once ROM" cards didn't look so bad, although I much preferred getting an application on a floppy disk, and the Do-It-Myself method is always a lot more satisfying (at least when I can stretch my expertise that far).

Exactly the reason I got the PIM card. HP RAM was wayyyy expensive and using up the internal RAM for a PIM was not what I wanted to do.
I do now regret buying the card.
As soon as I have some HP stuff cash available I will pick up a Klotz card and exchange that with the PIM and then download a PIM from hpcalc.org. I have already looked at them.

Yes, the RAM cards were very expensive, but I bought the Equation
Library ROM card and a 128KB RAM card anyway. Having done that, I'm very
reluctant to sacrifice a slot for an application on a ROM card. After
all, I expect that the applications on most ROM cards don't take up
anywhere near the whole 128KB, so I think it better to put any
applications on the RAM card, and, if necessary, purge what I'm not using to
install something else from the PC.
With the 49g+, I can now have about 3 times as much on my SD card as I
could have on my PC's HD drive back when I first got the 48SX. Is it
possible that I'll ever run out of room on the 128MB SD card? But then
too, I wondered the same thing about that humongous 40MB HD drive back
then. But at least I'll never have to try to fit Microsoft bloatware on
the SD card, so I guess it should be enough for a long time to come.
