Full Version: HP-67 Variation not mentioned before

Hi all.

I don't think I've seen this HP-67 variation mentioned before. On my USA models, the duplicate funtions (1/x, SQRT, etc.) are marked above the A, B, C, etc. keys, and of course, disappear when a program is loaded and the legends are covered by storing the card. The keys, "f" and "g" and "h" do not perform the functions.

On my Singapore version, the duplicate functions are listed above the keys, but also as black imprints on the lower face of the keys. And, when a program is loaded, the "f" and "g" no longer access these functions, but the "h" key still does!!

I'd just not seen this variation mentioned on the site or in books.

Very interesting! Do you have any photo's or the serial number of the calc? What you say implies that the 'operating system' was re-written as the 'normal' version of the HP67 stores these 'quick access' functions in program memory when there is no program loaded (my way of looking at this is that the default program(s) are these printed functions). I assume that the buttons now 'point' to a different part of the memory.

The fact that these functions were lost when a program is loaded (by card or by hand) was discussed on this site about a year ago.

Big Ooops. (That'll teach me to stay up until 3 a.m. playing with calcs...)

The functions ARE lost, just the same, when a program is loaded.

The keys still have the labels on the lower surface. Probably isn't that rare, but I don't know.

WOW. NO WONDER I HAVE A ONE-OF-A-KIND HP-67.

All this time I thought the Singapore model had the repeat functions on the bottom of the user function keys. And why not? The keys are blank... wasted space, and all, on all the others. And on this one, they're molded into the plastic with the same, black characters.

Or are they? AMAZING! The (or a) previous owner of my unique HP-67 used RUB-ON letters or lines to make PERFECT lettering on these keys. I even confused the slightly raised texture for molded plastic!!! What a perfect job!! How did they stick so well and so permanently?? While I don't see a coating of any kind, I haven't tried to scrape them off, and they LOOK original.... identical to the other keys. Same font. Same thickness. Same size! (I'd post a photo, but I don't know how, and I don't have a web site.)

Suffice it to say: I've looked at this calculator for years: and it was the one that the Forum community helped me rescue from a dead ACT chip and from insomniac dylexic agnostic card-reading. And not until I studied them tonight did I realize that it's not a "stock" job.

No wonder I have such an unusual model. It's a fake!
But it made sense, and it seemed like such a believable variation. I can see why a previous owner put the symbols there.

But I was fooled. I will have to admit: This one calculator has definitely turned out to be full of surprises!!!! But alas, while it's a "one of a kind", and definitely rare, it was not by HP's hand.
