Could anyone give me advice how to read HP67/97 Magnetic Cards into a PC. Actually I'm looking for the best way how to transfer Programs of about 20 magnetic cards to a newer HP Calculater (with some reprogramming if necessary)

Thanks for your tips!

Martin

Best bet is to print them off on an HP97 and convert/re-enter manually.

Hi;

I think the easiest way is using an HP41 with a card reader. HP67/97 programed cards can be directly used in the HP41 because the 82104A can "translate" any HP67/97 function to its equivalent in the HP41 system.

If you have an 82104A and a card reader it's easy. Otherwise you'll have to do as David mentioned and enter them manualy. Hope you have the listings...

If you need more specific advice, e-mail me.

Cheers.

Forgive-me.

The reason I mentioned the HP41 is that one can directly transfer the HP41 programs to a computer via HPIL, or record them in a disk (HPIL disk driver) and read them in a PC with specific software.

After reading my own post I realised that I did not let clear the why to read HP67/97 cards in an HP41 if what is wanted is reading them in a PC.

Thanks.

Thanks for your recommendations, but: I don't have a HP-41, a 82104A and HPIL Bus! (PC, yes..). Could anyone send me all this nice hardware for some dollars? Just a joke - forget about it.

So David's hint might be the only realistic. But .. which calculator. HP39G or 48gx. These Graphic calculators seem to be to only still sold and with programming features (39:HP Basic, 48:???) and PC connectivity. But is their programming language similar to 67/41/42 or is it completely different?

Martin

Hi;

The HP48 programming language is know as RPL, or Reverse-polish Programming Language. It is conceptually based in RPN and has many "enhancements" that some former HP/RPN users do not like that much.

Are you acquainted with these calculators, say,HP67/41/42? If you are and like programming them, I have HP BASIC as a bit far from their programming structure than HP48's RPL. In many situations, converting from 41's RPN to 48's RPL is somewhat easy, but in some particular cases it's better to rewrite the program from scratch.

I'd try firstly to copy these magnetic cards' contents and save the original, so you'll be able to work with the programs without loosing them.

E-mail me so I can give you other tips that may not apply to general circumstances.

Cheers.

The real problem: The magnetic card reader of my retired fathers HP97 doesn't work anymore and I don't know how to repair it. He's been using this calculator since years ( geometrician). I wrote some very helpful programs about 20 years ago for him and now this work is lost (unreadable magnetic cards in the old HP97).

Personally I have a 42S with infrared printer. This unit has no PC interface an I would have to retype (and adapt) every line of code and then make a gift to my father. Quite a lot of work (and I will lose my 42S!). Also, if the batteries are empty and he doesn't realize it, I can retype the code of 20 magnetic cards!

The best and fastest solution would be to repair or replace the card reader of the HP97. I live in Switzerland and I don't know any nice person who could do that for me. Is it difficult the get a card reader for a HP97 and what are the risks when replacing/repairing it? What would be the price for a HP97 card reader?

Second best solution (but probably quite expensive and time consuming) would be a HP41 with card reader, printer and PC interface. But where can I find this combination for a realistic price?

Third best solution: HP48 with serial Interface to PC. But: what would be the effort to translate 20 magnetic cards to RPL?

Cheers.

Check the articles section of this site or the links on RSKEY.ORG for excellent instructions on HP card reader repair. I much prefer the silicone fuel line over the o-rings.

Hallo Martin,

Vorschlag:

du schickst mir die Karten, ich lese sie mit meinem Kartenleser über 41CX ein und schicke sie dir als PC-File zurück, sodaß du die unter V41 lesen kannst.
