This might have been touched on before, but was just wondering if there's any function on the 42s which is not included or cant be performed with the 34s?

I guess the full dot matrix display of the 42s is still better as this allows more flexibility on what can be done or displayed compared to the 34s half matrix/half character display..

There's a comparision table between 42s vs. 34s commands in the WP34s manual (Appendix F, page 152), which you can download here:

http://wp34s.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/wp34s/doc/

I guess you'll find here what you need ...

Franz

Edition 3.1 of the manual doesn't have any pages beyond 151 nor seem a comparison between the 42s and 34s.

I guess you have an old outdated version of the manual, because the current version does have this comparision list (and 167 pages).

That's why I added a link where you can find the latest version ...

Please take this link http://wp34s.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/wp34s/doc/Manual_wp_34s_3_1.pdf and look at Appendix F :-)

No agraph and no beep ;(.

what else is there thats missing? ;)

Please RTFM and it will tell you (including the reasons).

I did.

Was just wondering if there's anything else that 42s can do that 34s can't. I know that there's alot of things that 34s can do that 42s can't.

Hard to believe. Please follow the link above, read Appendix F, and you shall find everything in this matter.

From my point of view:

  1. The 42s has more RAM (8KB or more). The 34S compensates for some of this by making use of flash memory for programs.
  2. The 42s has named variables and can handle more data types natively than the 34S can.
  3. The separation of programs is more evolved in the 42s.
  4. Program names (labels) are longer in the 42s.
  5. Numbers are stored as a single program line in the 42s.

Thank you for the link to the updated v3.1 manual.

The older v3.1 of the manual I have that didn't have more than 151 pages and has a date of 1.6.12 with this final portion in its description:

"... updated App. A and C, and expanded App. B and E, also explaining the floating point formats; added appendices covering the emulator and troubleshooting"

While the newer v3.1 of the manual is dated 27.7.12 and has 180 pages with this final portion in its description:

"... abandoned the internal expert’s catalog; updated and rearranged large parts of the introductory text and the appendices, also explaining the floating point formats, the emulator, troubleshooting, and corresponding operations of HP-42S."

I'm not sure why the manual with these extensive amount of changes didn't warrant a new suffix number to differentiate it from the one downloaded earlier. Yet, maybe, the version number has more to do with the emulator than it does to the owner's manual.

The "older v3.1" was build 3101, the "newer" is build 3214. In between, there were committed almost 30 updates of the manual, with the 42S comparison table entered by end of June. As mentioned here several times (and stated on p.1 of the manual), WP 34S has been a moving target so far.

The numbering goes with the firmware - not with the manual. In the time since build 3101, there were some 80 software updates: some bug fixes, a command renamed, some catalog rearrangements, introduction of the plot commands and modulo functions, updates of STOPW, and letter bit map modifications. In total it was the usual mess - no reason for incrementing to 3.2 in our opinion.

Should become a lot calmer now :-) At least I won't change the manual anymore unless anybody proves it being wrong at a specified location.
