Hello, this message is for anyone, on this board who can help me, with his advices to repair a HP97 that I've just got in a quite pretty cosmetically conditions.
Ignazio I would like to send you a private message but I can't do it, I don't know your post address.

1)The machine came with a network adapter and a battery pack maybe rebuilt, the pack doesn't hold the charge (I'm waiting for a new battery pack bouught on internet).
the calculator turns on but shows sometimes an error message "-E ror -E"

2)The card reader is not working and when I tried to insert a card I got the message "error", the card i dirty from the gummy leakage: i think and I hope maybe it need just to clean it and replace whit a couple of "o rings" or , better a picece o a silicon tube.

3)The printer doesn't work properly, the card feeder run but slowely and there are no printed characters.

Hi Aurelio

For repairing the card reader, please check out my page with a detailed guide:

Best regards

Sounds like you have it plugged into the wall wart (ac adaptor) without the battery pack installed.

Don't ;-)

insufficient power to operate the printer and card reader regardless of the card reader being dirty (which it probalby is).

Wait for your battery pack, charge it up as per the calc specs. Then test the printer. Clean the card reader and test with a charged battery pack.

Hello Geoff and thank-you for the answer:
Unfortunately I don't know if the previous owner switched on it without the battery pack installed, hope not. I never did it because I read in the forum archives the reasons to avoid it (I don' understand why these machines were not protected at that time against this kind of problems, but far from these kind of discussions..)
So I'm waiting for the battery pack then I'll try again

Hello Peter!
I will read your instructions, thank-you

Well The 97 is protected, however it will not function correctly it relies on the battery pack for a couple things. The first is power supply smoothing, there does not seem to be any effective power supply filter caps in the 97 that I can find. on my 97 if I plug it in without a battery pack the display flickers. The other thing is the AC input is mainly for charging the battery and cannot produce enough current to operate the printer, a charged battery is required for that.

IIRC, someone on this forum has stated that operating the printer w/o a battery installed can/will damage the printer. IDK if this is true, and have never attempted to do this with any Topcat.
