Full Version: WP34-S Flashing Cable Repair?

Hello,

Unfortunately, the serial flashing cable that I use for WP-34S has suffered an issue. One of the 6 male pins that connect to the backside of the calculator appears missing. There is a retaining ring at the bottom of the pin, where it connects to the black connector housing. That ring appears to have been opened, likely leading to the pin falling out. I guess I was not careful in inserting/removing the cable at some point, leading to the retaining ring failure :(

I have a new cable lying around, so I am not in an immediate need of repairing this. I just like the comfort of knowing that a backup exists.

So, I was wondering if this is repairable?

Silly question, I suppose, but why do you need more than one cable? Nobody else I know of, except Gene Wright and perhaps a few other key contributors to the repurposing project, has more than one. And please remember, these cables are a gift to the user community from HP, which they have authorized Gene to distribute. It's generous of them to do so, and it's not as if you paid anything more than postage for them.

Correct. I do not need more than one cable. Back in January of this year, when I purchased the 30B, and was inquiring about flashing it, I was offered a cable. I accepted that gracious offer, and was stunned to see two cables show up from that individual (incidentally, the individual was not Gene, however Gene appears to be a generous individual himself!).

It has been a few months since then, and I actually forgot about the extra cable that came in that package. It was not until today that it crossed my mind when I noticed my first cable was broken.

I value the gesture from that individual for sending me the cables, I realize how precious they are, and naturally came here for some constructive help in repairing the broken cable. Innocent enough (I think).

HP used to send them in packs of two. I gave my spare to Walter.

Cannot answer the repairable question...

The pins are called "pogo pins" or "spring loaded contact pins". I've seen them on ebay, but they are also available from electronics suppliers such as Mouser or Allied. They come in different sizes, don't know right off what size the HP plug uses.

Thank you for the reply. I will look into your suggestion.
