Have you never seen a classic series logic PCB signed with 'PCM' near the 1820-1189 ROM? Look at the picture linked at:

I've seen initials and other notations on most classics, especially those with ceramic packages.
Most pre-1990'ish Voyagers have initials of the final assembler under one of the foot pads.

this is a manufacturer mark, added to the finalized layout by the PCB manufacturer (so you could track down faulty parts); it's nothing personal :)

It's either a PCB manufacturers mark, or a "signature" of the board designer. If it's not on all boards, then most likely a manufacturer mark.
But I've had cases where my own "signature" on my boards have been eye-balled by management and removed in subsequent runs. At my current company we aren't allowed to add signatures to our
works of art :-(
